Hopkins Academy sophomore guard Madi Stevens, right, and Sam Parker of Mahar vie for a rebound in the first half of the Hawks' 72-63 loss to the Senators on Friday in Hadley.

Three players scored in double digits as the Hopkins Academy girls basketball team soared past Greenfield 59-18 Tuesday.

Olivia Mathieu paced Hopkins (12-5, 12-3, Franklin South) with 16 points, followed closely by sharp-shooting Madi Stevens (15 points, including four 3-pointers). Emma Konieczny rounded out the trio with 11 points.

Mathieu did everything she could to try to will the team to a victory over Mahar on Feb. 3.

The junior guard created turnovers, fought hard on the glass and took over when needed offensively, but it wasn't enough in a 72-63 loss to the Senators at home Friday night.

"We fed off her energy. She was finishing her shots tonight, and she was getting out on the break," Golden Hawks coach Fred Ciaglo said. "When somebody starts making shots, it gets contagious. She was that leader tonight. She went out there and played a heck of a game. She took it to them and everybody else followed her. She was our leader tonight."

Mathieu matched a career-high 28 points to go with eight rebounds, five assists and four steals, but the team couldn't avenge the 48-31 loss it suffered on Jan. 2 in Orange.

"We were very excited to play them again, and I thought we played very well," Mathieu said. "I'm pleased with how we played. If we bring this intensity to our other games, we'll have an easier time. This was definitely a good game to start our (run toward) the postseason."

Still in search of their elusive first win, the Golden Hawks (0-17, 0-15 Hampshire West) were capsized by the Green Wave (11-6, 10-5 Hampshire East) 71-30 in Hadley Monday.

Andrew Bemben had 11 points and was the only player to score in double figures for Hopkins Academy. Adam Daniere added six points and seven rebounds.

Jacob Kosakowski scored nine points and Chris Koch added eight as the Golden Hawks lost 71-37 to Mahar at home on Feb. 2.
