Monday's high school boys basketball: Easthampton loses in triple overtime

A career-high by Casey White wasn't enough as the Easthampton boys basketball team fell to Pioneer Regional 72-71 in triple overtime in Northfield Monday.

The Eagles (10-7, 8-7 Hampshire East) missed a desperation heave from half court as the Panthers held on, despite 35 points by White.

Easthampton senior Jon Hutton hit a 3-pointer with 0.2 seconds left in regulation to force overtime. White scored on a driving layup late in the first overtime and Pioneer missed two would-be game winners.

The Panthers led 72-68 later in triple overtime, but Chris Starcun (eight points, 19 rebounds) completed a three-point play to pull Easthampton within one. At the other end Pioneer missed two free throws before the Eagles' half-court try missed.

White had eight of Easthampton's 11 3-pointers. Hutton added a career-high 13 points.

Northampton 74, East Longmeadow 42 - The defending champion Blue Devils (9-7, 3-2 Suburban) moved within a win of qualifying for the postseason after cruising past the Spartans (5-11, 1-4) at home.

Jarrod Neumann had 16 points and Jared Murphy added 14 to lead Hamp.

Jake Ross chipped in with 10, while Danny Mann scored his first career varsity points en route to eight points.

Every Blue Devil saw at least eight minutes of action.

Amherst Regional 50, Westfield 43 - The Hurricanes (8-7, 4-1 Suburban) took control of first place in the league with the road victory over the Bombers (6-7, 2-2).

Tchuijo Nkamebo had 12 points and eight rebounds, while Noris Cuevas-Nova added 11 points and seven boards for Amherst, which led 18-4 after the first quarter and 37-20 after three.

Justin Crosby (17 points) did not play the first half for Westfield, while Joe Meade (seven points) did not play the second half.

Frontier Regional 49, Mohawk Regional 39 - Three players scored in double digits and Ryan Hoar notched 15 rebounds to help the Red Hawks (14-2, 13-2 Hampshire West) beat Mohawk.

Justin Mieczkowski had 11 points, while Hoar and Nate Perret each had 10 points.

South Hadley 66, Agawam 45 - The Tigers (7-7, 3-1 Central) used consistent scoring through all four quarters and seven 3-pointers to defeat the Brownies at home.

Evan Marcus (five 3-pointers) and Avon White scored 21 and 14 points, respectively, for South Hadley. Anthony Bullough also contributed nine points to the effort.

Ten different players scored for South Hadley.

Greenfield 71, Hopkins Academy 30 - Still in search of their elusive first win, the Golden Hawks (0-17, 0-15 Hampshire West) were capsized by the Green Wave (11-6, 10-5 Hampshire East) in Hadley.

Andrew Bemben had 11 points and was the only player to score in double figures for Hopkins Academy. Adam Daniere added six points and seven rebounds.

Palmer 54, Hampshire Regional 43 - The Raiders' backs aren't against the wall yet, but they're almost there. Hampshire (7-9, 2-3 Bi-County North) needs to win three of its four remaining games - at Granby, vs. Southwick, vs. Monson, at Belchertown - to earn a trip to the postseason.

The Panthers took a 24-16 halftime edge and the Raiders couldn't dig out of the hole.

Keith Cotnoir led Hampshire with 17 points and 12 rebounds, while Shane Andrews added 11 points.

Smith Vocational 81, St. Mary 60 - Behind Jordan Castillo's career-high 27 points, the Vikings (11-2, 7-2 Tri-County) surged past the Saints (2-13, 1-9 Tri-County) in Westfield.

Allan Rivera (19 points) and Sam Sharpe (10 points, seven assists) also scored in double figures, while Shawn Wackerbarth narrowly missed a double-double with nine points and 12 rebounds.

The Vikings started and ended the game strong, scoring 55 points in the first and fourth quarters combined compared to the Saints' 29 points.

They also had 20 assists on 29 field goals, and grabbed 31 rebounds and 14 steals as a team.

Holyoke Catholic 55, Gateway 45 - A strong second quarter gave the Gaels (6-9, 2-2 Bi-County South) a 20-point lead going into halftime and Nate Powers netted a game-high 31 points to dispatch the Gators (3-13, 1-4) in Chicopee.

Powers pulled down 14 rebounds to go along with four steals. Joe Kass added nine rebounds and four blocks.

Austin Cook had 12 points to pace the Gators (3-13, 1-4).
