Ruth DeNyse, worked at Hampshire Bookshop
HOLYOKE - Ruth E. (March) DeNyse, 88, formerly of Amherst, died Thursday, Feb. 2, 2012, at the Loomis House Nursing Center in Holyoke.
Born June 30, 1923, in Northampton, she was the daughter of the late Clifford and Theresa (Lyons) March. Ruth attended Northampton schools and graduated from Northampton High School in the class of 1941. She graduated from the former McCarthy's Business College in 1942.
She worked at the former Hampshire Bookshop and went on to work in the treasurer's office at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. Devoted to her family, Ruth was an avid mystery novel reader and crossword puzzle solver. She instilled a love of reading and learning in her children. Ruth was a Friend of the Jones Library and a member of the Grace Episcopal Church in Amherst.
Ruth was married for 46 years to the late John L. DeNyse, who died in 2002. She leaves a son, Philip DeNyse and wife Lynn of Dunstable; a daughter, Diana DeNyse of Amherst; a son, Mark DeNyse and wife Dolly of Hingham; five grandsons, Cody, John, Christopher, Andrew and Cooper; and a granddaughter, Emily. She also leaves a brother, Norman March and wife Marie of Springfield.
Ruth was predeceased by her sister, Olive Thieme of Arizona, who died in 2004.
Calling hours will be held Monday, Feb. 6, from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Douglass Funeral Service, Amherst. A memorial service will be held Tuesday, Feb. 7, at 10 a.m. at the Douglass Funeral service, with burial following in Wildwood Cemetery, Amherst.
