Mild weekend brings out partyers

College-age people enjoying unseasonably warm evenings led to several noise complaints during the last weekend of January and prompted the arrest of three University of Massachusetts students holding a loud party at their off-campus apartment.

Amherst Police Lt. William Menard said the department received numerous complaints on the nights of Jan. 27 and Jan. 28 as people talked loudly and shouted as they made their way through downtown streets and neighborhoods north of the UMass campus.

"There was a lot of pedestrian traffic throughout town, particularly in the center and the area of North Pleasant Street near Hobart Lane," Menard said.

While three people were arrested or summoned to court for being minors in possession of alcohol or violating the town's open container bylaw, the most significant incident took place Jan. 29 at 12:28 a.m. That was when officers responded to Puffton Village on North Pleasant Street for a complaint of a loud party.

Once they got to the scene, police found more than 15 people attending the party and got little cooperation from the residents, Menard said.

Dennis R. Lynch and Eric J. Russo, both 22, and Zachary P. Munsell, 21, all of Puffton Village, Unit 330, were arrested on charges of violating the town's noise bylaw, Menard said. All three are UMass students and could be assessed as much as $300 for each violation.

Menard said the weekend activity was somewhat reminiscent of early fall and late spring, when weather is typically more conducive to behavior that affects permanent residents.

"There were a lot of people out and about," Menard said.

Amherst firefighters were also busy with medical calls, including 11 patients who needed medical attention after consuming too much alcohol. Eight of these incidents occurred on the UMass campus.
