Five seek vacated school board seat

Five residents have expressed interest in filling the seat on the Amherst School Committee that was left vacant when Steve Rivkin resigned in December.

The deadline for submission of statements of interest was Thursday.

The four remaining committee members will meet with the Select Board Monday at 7 p.m. to listen to oral statements from the candidates and vote on who should hold the seat until the annual elections in April.

Michael Aronson, 52, who lives on Old Farm Road, has been a critic of the school district's special education policies.

"My interest is to be part of the elective body overseeing the finances and educational standards applied in our district," he wrote in his statement of interest.

Amy Brodigan, 51, lives on Aubinwood Road. She is assistant coordinator of the Labor/Management Workplace Education Program at the University of Massachusetts.

"I love thinking about teaching, curriculum and innovative approaches to improve the quality of education for all learners," she wrote.

Larry Kelley, 57, who lives on South Pleasant Street, is a blogger and former owner of Amherst Athletic Club.

"As a father with two young children in the Amherst public schools, former small business owner with 28 years experience managing a service-oriented operation, and life-long multigenerational resident of the town, I feel unequivocally qualified to serve and look forward to a lively tenure," he wrote.

Lawrence O'Brien, 48, lives on Harris Street and is a teacher in Belchertown. He did not issue a statement of interest.

Joan Temkin, 67, lives on Middle Street. She is a former member of the Pelham and Regional School committees and is marketing and membership director at the Amherst Area Chamber of Commerce.

Temkin said that, if selected, she will not run for a three-year term in the April 3 town election.
