Amherst Regional announces 2012 Hall of Fame class

The second Hall of Fame class at Amherst Regional includes a soon-to-be Super Bowl participant.

James Ihedigbo, currently a starting safety for the New England Patriots, is the youngest member of the 2012 Hall of Fame class, which was announced at halftime of Monday's boys basketball game between Amherst and Northampton.

Ihedigbo graduated in 2002 and was a key member on the 1999 Super Bowl champion Hurricanes.

The Hall of Fame class spans six decade and includes 10 athletes, one coach and one team. They will be honored in a ceremony Sept. 19 at a site to be determined.

Colleen Schmitt (Class of 1997) starred in field hockey, diving and softball. Jen Pariseau (1993), a basketball, softball and tennis player, was a key member on the Hurricanes' 1993 state championship girls basketball team.

Shawn Durocher Chalmers (1988) was a standout in softball, basketball and golf. Mario Lopez (1988) starred in lacrosse and eventually coached at UMass and played for Team USA.

Sisters Rhonda Jackson (1985) and Nadine Jackson (1980) dominated the athletic fields in the late 1970s and early 1980s. Both sisters played basketball, while Nadine also was on the volleyball and track & field teams, while Rhonda played softball and field hockey.

Steve Peene (1978) was a swimmer, and James Parkinson (1965) and Frank Kuzmiski (1940s) both were football, basketball and baseball players.

Other inductees include the undefeated Intercounty League champion 1959 football team, and Betty Lawson, who coached numerous sports from the 1950s to the 1980s.
