More verbal commitments for UMass football before signing day

AMHERST - Verbal commitments continue to arrive for the University of Massachusetts football program in anticipation of Wednesday's National Signing Day.

Julian Kaminoff, a 5-foot-11, 175-pound safety became the latest recruit to abandon another Mid-American Conference school to play for new coach Charley Molnar at UMass as he switched from Buffalo according to Scout.com. Molnar's son, also named Charley, was a graduate assistant at Buffalo last year.

While the Minutemen have plucked a handful of recruits from their future MAC rivals, running back Stacey Bedell came at the expense of one of the Minutemen's former Colonial Athletic Association rivals. The Mastic Beach, N.Y. native reneged on a commitment to play at James Madison to become a Minutemen. While ESPN's recruiting site did not have his 2011 statistics, he rushed 208 times for 1,658 yards and 18 touchdowns as a junior in 2010.

ESPN scouting described him as follows:

"A sleeper on the recruiting trail, Bedell would be receiving more interest if he had a bit more size. Still a well-rounded back with polished skill-set. Projects best in a multi-purpose type role at the next level or as a complementary back. ... Not a back with the explosiveness, sudden movements or outside speed that is coveted at the college level given his smaller size but overall we feel Bedell can contribute and move the chains. Not great in one area but good in a lot and versatile."

According to the South Florida Sun Sentinel, Bernard Davis, a 6-foot-2, 175-pound wide receiver from Lake Worth, Fla., has chosen UMass over several other MAC schools.

According to ESPN:

"Davis is an athletic and wiry prospect with nice measurables, a slim build and outstanding hands. He is a natural plucker with quick hands and always extends away from his frame. Plays both on the inside and outside and isn't afraid of traffic or extending in a crowd. He is a quicker than fast prospect with good surge off the line and quickness into his routes. ... Is extremely competitive in traffic and very tough. ... Has a very wide catch radius and will extend in traffic with no regard for his body. The issue with Davis is he lacks great burst and top end speed. He runs adequately, but not with quick-twitch explosiveness. ... Is not going to win many footraces or run by people against top level competition. Davis may be an FBS/FCS level tweener due to his speed, but his hands and size give him value."

The Sun Sentinel reported that Zach Slafsky, a 6-foot-2, 235-pound linebacker from Heritage-Delray, is also considering UMass as well as Boston College and Florida Atlantic.

Two offensive linemen also have given verbal commitments to UMass. Michael Boland, who ESPN lists at 6-foot-7, 294 pounds and Scout.com at 6-foot-6, 295 pounds, chose UMass over Duke and Tulane, while Cameron Mock, a 6-foot-8, 305-pounder might be the Minutemen's first ever recruit from New Mexico.

ALREADY ON CAMPUS - Derek Beck, a wide receiver who signed last year to play at UMass and went to prep school for the 2011 season, is enrolled in classes and will take part in spring practice.

Beck, of Martinsville, N.J., is 6-foot-3 and 190 pounds. Molnar was unavailable to comment on Beck, who will likely be announced as part of the recruiting class Wednesday.

SIGNING DAY CELEBRATION - Molnar will host a signing day celebration event at 6 p.m. Wednesday at the Amherst Brewing Company where he will announce the signees to fans in attendance.

IGWENAGU AT SENIOR BOWL - Former Minuteman Emil Igwenagu caught one pass for 14 yards at the Senior Bowl as his North team beat the South 23-13 at Montgomery, Ala,, on Saturday.

The pass came from Michigan State's Kirk Cousins late in the fourth quarter. Igwenagu played both fullback and tight end in the game.

DEES TO THE NFL - Former UMass recruiting coordinator Andrew Dees was hired as an assistant coach by the Buffalo Bills. Dees, the only coach to stay at UMass between Kevin Morris' firing and Molnar's hiring to maintain contact with recruits, will be the assistant defensive line coach for the Bills.
