Shirley Moores, loved animals

AMHERST - Shirley J. (Sanders) Moores, 81, a lifelong resident of South Amherst, died Wednesday, Jan. 25, at the Center for Extended Care at Amherst.

Born Aug. 10, 1930, in Pelham, she was the daughter of the late Archibald A. and Helen T. (Naylor) Sanders. Shirley was educated in Amherst schools and graduated in 1949. She was a member of the South Amherst Grange and a 4-H member and volunteer.

She grew up working in the family apple orchards and later worked as a clerk typist for over 45 years at Amherst College. Shirley met her husband, Edward A. Moores, on the Fourth of July in 1956 at Mountain Park, and they were married 11 months later.

Shirley was predeceased by her husband, Edward, in 2006. She is survived by her son, Edward A. Moores Jr., and his wife, Mary, of North Carolina; her two daughters, Jean Moores of Amherst and Susan Crosby and her husband, Ben, of Buckland; four grandchildren, Evan Moores and Killian, Brett and Erin Crosby; and two sisters, Helen Roberge and her husband, Jerry, of Amherst and Janet Sanders of Easton.

She will be especially remembered for her big warm smile and her love of animals, especially cats. Funeral services will be Tuesday, Jan. 31, at 10 a.m. at the Douglass Funeral Service, Amherst, with burial following in South Amherst Cemetery.
