HATFIELD — The Hopkins Academy boys basketball team’s struggles continued Monday with a 70-34 loss to rival Smith Academy.

The Golden Hawks (0-13, 0-11 Hampshire West) remained winless, while the Falcons (10-3, 9-2) qualified for the postseason.

"My kids played hard, I can never not give them that," first-year Hopkins Academy coach Tom Bell said. "We're still struggling right now trying to put everything together."

Hopkins kept up with Smith early as Drew Bemben's 10 first-half points kept the Golden Hawks in the game. Bemben, who finished with 19 points, knocked down back-to-back 3-pointers to start an 8-0 run for Hopkins cutting Smith's lead early in the second to 18-12. The Golden Hawks entered the half trailing 29-21.

The second half had a big change of tempo though as Smith outscored Hopkins 25-9 in the third quarter, capped by David Longstreeth's 3-pointer at the buzzer that made it 54-30. Smith Academy then held Hopkins to only four points in the fourth.

Kate Sullivan had 20 points, while Madison Stevens added 10 for Hopkins (9-4, 9-2 Franklin South), which moved one game ahead of Easthampton (10-3, 7-3) with the win and the Eagles' loss to Athol.

Olivia Mathieu scored a game-high 17 points as the Golden Hawks (8-4, 8-2 Franklin South) cruised 61-26 past Turners Falls in Montague on Jan. 20.

Kate Sullivan added 13, while twin sister Mackenzie Sullivan had 11 for Hopkins, which has won four of its last five games.
