Hopkins girls basketball moves into first with win over Smith Academy

The Hopkins Academy girls basketball team completed its season sweep against rival Smith Academy and moved into first place with a 59-41 win at home Tuesday night.

After a close first two quarters, the Golden Hawks (9-4, 9-2 Franklin South) used their full-court press to force the Falcons (5-6, 4-6 Franklin South) into bad possessions in the second half and pulled away.

Kate Sullivan had 20 points, while Madison Stevens added 10 for Hopkins, which moved one game ahead of Easthampton (10-3, 7-3) with the win and the Eagles' loss to Athol.

Alyssa Klepacki had a career-high 27 points for Smith Academy and now has 957 for her career.

Amherst Regional 59, Agawam 39 - Victoria Stewart had 16 points, six rebounds and six assists as the Hurricanes (9-2, 1-0 Suburban) moved within a win of being able to defend their Western Massachusetts Division 1 Tournament championship.

Brianna Leonard also had 16 points, while Forbasaw Nkamebo had 12 points for Amherst, which led 22-6 after the first quarter.

West Springfield 51, Northampton 47 - The Blue Devils (8-4, 2-2 Valley Wheel) had the Terriers (10-2, 4-0) on the ropes late but couldn't pull off the win on the road.

Tied with 48 seconds left, Hamp had a putback basket but it was waved off after a player stepped out of bounds. Dana Theobald (29 points) then made two free throws on the other end to give West Springfield the lead.

The Blue Devils then had a layup roll in and out on their final possession, before the Terriers sealed the win at the line.

Anna Walther had a career-high 25 points, while Samantha Barnes added nine points in the loss.

Hampshire Regional 52, Sci-Tech 29 - Jess Kowal had 12 points and 11 rebounds as the Raiders (5-7) won in Springfield.

Taylor Abbott added 10 points, while Sarah Kober chipped in with nine points and eight rebounds.

Chelsea Moussette had six points, five assists and four steals in the win.

Frontier Regional 46, Pioneer Regional 31 - Olivia Riordan scored a game-high 12 points with seven rebounds and played a solid all-around game to lead the Red Hawks (7-4, 7-4 Franklin South) to the road victory.

Carly Donnis added eight points in the win.

Sabis 46, Granby 25 - The Rams (8-3, 1-2 Bi-County Central) managed double figures in only the fourth quarter in the loss in Springfield.

Alyssa Boardway led Granby with eight points, while Meghan Sullivan added six.

The Rams played well defensively in holding Jazmine Collins to only nine points.

Belchertown 58, Commerce 9 - Téa Spellacy paced the Orioles' offensive attack and helped secure a victory at home.

Spellacy netted 12 points and recorded four steals for Belchertown (7-6, 2-1 Bi-County East).

Jessica Karrasch scored 10 points and Marissa Kopacz chipped in with six in the win.

Holyoke Catholic 51, Putnam 28 - Kieran Ramsey netted a career-high 22 points, including four 3-pointers, as the Gaels (6-7 3-1 Bi-County West) defeated the Beavers in Springfield.

Ramsey also handed out four assists in what coach Terry Murphy called "the best game of her career."

Kyra Robins also chipped in with 10 points and an assist.

Central 54, South Hadley 47 - The Tigers (5-5) could not overcome a first quarter in which they only scored one point against the Golden Eagles.

Kara Callahan had a game-high 14 points, while Kelly Pouliot added 12 points for the Tigers.

Gateway Regional 38, Pioneer Christian 22 - The Gators' defense kept the Eagles offense in check only allowing seven points in the first three quarters.

Gateway (9-1, 9-0 Tri-County) clinched a postseason berth with the win.

Chelsea Merritt led all scorers with 14 points in the winning effort for the Gators.

Franklin Tech 67, Smith Vocational 20 - Megan Shain led the Vikings (1-10, 1-7 Tri-County) with eight points in the home loss.

Jeanine Sepulveda and Nashaelid Cintron both added four points for Smith Vocational.

Boys basketball


South Hadley 69, Granby 58 - Luis Agrait led the Tigers (4-6) in scoring with a career-high 24 points as South Hadley moved within one non-Division 1 victory of qualifying for the postseason.

Trevor McKenna scored 16 points for South Hadley.

Aaron Gaj, Andy Gifford and Corey Baker all had 12 points for the Rams (9-4), who need one win to qualify for the postseason.
