Northampton boys basketball rallies to beat Longmeadow

The Northampton boys basketball team held Longmeadow to 11 points in the final 11 minutes to pull out a 50-45 victory Monday in Northampton.

Hamp trailed 34-28 in the third when back-to-back 3-pointers by Mack Hale started a 17-5 run that gave the Blue Devils (6-6, 1-1 Suburban) a 45-39 lead with 4 minutes, 52 seconds left in the fourth.

Jarrod Neumann then scored four of the team's final five points as Hamp held on for its fourth straight and moved to .500 for the first time since the team was 1-1.

"We made the (defensive) adjustments," Hamp coach Rey Harp said. "It represents the way we played this season where we shadowbox for a while and we cant afford to do that, that's what we're trying to fix, but when we found our defensive rhythm we were able to get in them and read what they were trying to accomplish."

The Blue Devils' defense limited the Lancers (6-8, 0-2) to one shot per possession for most of the second half. Longmeadow had three field goals in the final 11 minutes en route to its sixth straight loss.

"I thought we played pretty strong defense in the first half," said Harp, whose team trailed 24-20 at the break. "We were just giving them extra possessions. We were watching. We were letting them dictate what the outcome of every possession would be."

Neumann scored a game-high 25 points to go along with 13 rebounds. Jared Murphy added eight points before fouling out, while Hale finished with seven.
