Alleged theft of roses leads to arrests of three men after chase near I-91

NORTHAMPTON - Police arrested three Holyoke men on a slew of charges Saturday, one whom they pepper-sprayed after he became uncooperative during a traffic stop on Interstate Route 91 south.

Two other men jumped from a stolen vehicle and ran from the highway into woods near Underwood Avenue at the base of Mount Tom in Easthampton. They were caught after a half-hour search involving Northampton and Easthampton police, as well as two State Police canine units shortly after midnight Friday.

Northampton police arrested Abraham Alvarado Cintron, 34, of 803 High St. Apt. 3RD in Holyoke on charges of receiving a stolen motor vehicle (subsequent offense), operating a motor vehicle under the influence of alcohol (third offense), possession of an open container of alcohol in a motor vehicle, operating a motor vehicle with a suspended license (subsequent offense), attaching plates to a motor vehicle, failing to stop for police and receiving stolen property under $250.

Also arrested were Luis Angel Cedeno, 40, of 92 Chapin St., Apt. 1, in Holyoke on charges of receiving a stolen vehicle and disorderly conduct, and Luis Dadan Colon, of Hampton St., Apt. 2, in Holyoke on a charge of receiving a stolen vehicle.

Police said Cintron, Cedeno and Colon were at the Pride Gas Station on King Street at around 11:30 p.m. where one of them reportedly stole a small package of roses.

Police picked up sight of their vehicle near the on-ramp for I-91 south on Mount Tom Road and pursued the trio south where Cintron was driving at 20 mph in the breakdown lane, police said.

When the car finally stopped, Cintron, the driver, and Colon, a passenger, fled the scene and into the woods off the interstate, police said. Cedeno, also a passenger, remained in the vehicle and became uncooperative as police questioned him.

Police pepper-sprayed him and arrested him. About a half hour later, police and dogs nabbed Cintron and Colon along the slopes of Mount Tom near Underwood Avenue in Easthampton.
