The South Hadley boys basketball team played tremendous man-to-man defense and pulled away from a four-point halftime lead to beat Holyoke Catholic 70-43 Thursday at Chicopee Academy.

South Hadley (3-5) outscored the Gaels (2-7) 20-5 in the third and led 66-34 with 3:25 left in the game.

Luis Agrait and T.J. Fitzell each had career-highs with 16 points, while sophomore Avon White added a career-high 14 points for the Tigers, who are now 2-0 against non-Division 1 opponents and halfway to a tournament berth.

Nate Powers finished three blocks shy of a triple-double with 18 points, 11 rebounds and seven blocks. Powers is 15 points shy of becoming the 10th Gael to reach 1,000 career points.

Jeff Laprade added 14 points in the loss.

Holyoke Catholic hosts Granby at 7:30 tonight at Chicopee Academy.

Belchertown 60, Gateway 31 - Zach Parsons had a game-high 21 points as the Orioles (9-3) beat the Gators (3-8) in Huntington.

Parsons was the only player from Belchertown in double digits, as the Orioles had a strong all-around performance with 11 scorers.

Austin Cook (10 rebounds) was the only Gator in double digits with 11 points.

Easthampton 73, Mohawk Regional 43 - Chris Starcun scored a career-high 21 points with 12 rebounds as the Eagles (9-3, 7-3 Hampshire East) cruised to the home victory.

Casey White had 17 points to go with seven boards, five assists and three steals. Jeff VanOudenhove added 12 points and three steals in the win.

Smith Vocational 73, Franklin Tech 59 - Allan Rivera had 24 points and 10 rebounds, while Sam Sharpe added 20 points and 10 rebounds as the Vikings (6-2, 3-2 Tri-County) won on the road.

Jordan Castillo added 11 points and 10 rebounds for Smith, which had 17 assists on 26 field goals.

Mahar Regional 55, Frontier Regional 51 - Nate Perret scored a team-best 16 points for the Red Hawks (9-2, 8-2 Hampshire West), who saw their five-game winning streak end in Orange.

Ryan Hoar (team-high nine rebounds) and Peter Watroba both had 11 points for Frontier, which needs one more win to qualify for the tournament.

Jesse Lacroix put in a game-high 20 as the Senators (10-1, 9-1 Hampshire East) clinched a postseason berth.

Smith Academy 73, Pioneer Regional 56 - Keith Natale (15 rebounds) led all scorers with 24 points as the Falcons (9-3, 8-2 Hampshire West) beat the Panthers (3-7, 3-7 Hampshire West) in Northfield.

Mat Sulda had 18 points and 10 assists in the win.

Derek McMahon also had 18 points, while David Longstreeth just missed out on a double-double with nine points and 10 boards for the Falcons.

Turners Falls 55, Hopkins Academy 29 - Andrew Omer led the Golden Hawks (0-12, 0-10 Hampshire West) with six points in the home loss.

Satchel Teixeira added five points for Hopkins, while Drew Bemben and Adam Daniere had four apiece.

Girls basketball


Hampshire Regional 59, Cathedral 28 - The Raiders (4-6, 2-1 Bi-County East) had three players in double figures and played outstanding on the defensive end to win their fourth game in the last five.

Sarah Kober's double-double of 11 points and 15 rebounds led Hampshire, while Chelsea Moussette (eight assists) and Savannah Waters both put up career-highs of 10 points.

Palmer 32, Belchertown 29 - Jillian Lund had nine points, but the Orioles (6-6, 1-1 Bi-County East) saw their five-game winning streak come to a close against the Panthers at home.

Catherine Anziano put in a 3-pointer and Sarah Woodcock's four points off the bench helped Belchertown regain the lead late in the fourth quarter 29-28. The O's could not hold on though as Palmer (9-3, 2-0 Bi-County East) got four points in the closing minutes to pull away.

Southwick 57, Holyoke Catholic 41 - Freshman Kyra Robins had a team-high 11 points as the Gaels (5-7, 2-1 Bi-County West) fell in Southwick.

Robins was the only Holyoke Catholic player in double digits. Both Jill Pirog and Kieran Ramsey finished with nine points in the loss.
