Hopkins girls basketball edges Athol

Emma Konieczny made 4-of-5 free throws in the closing minutes as Hopkins Academy knocked off Athol 53-51 in Hadley on Tuesday night.

Konieczny shots came with under two minutes left to seal a nail biter between the Golden Hawks (7-4, 7-2 Franklin South) and Red Raiders (6-5, 6-3 Franklin North).

Konieczny scored a season-high 11 points, while Olivia Mathieu led all scorers with 21 points for the Golden Hawks (7-4, 7-2 Franklin South).

Mackenzie Sullivan added nine points and eight boards while her twin sister Kate Sullivan was in double digits with 10 points.

Northampton 55, Agawam 36 - The Blue Devils (7-3) wore out the Brownies (3-6) en route to the road win.

Hamp led 16-10 after the first quarter then outscored Agawam 13-8 in both the second and third to slowly pull away.

Sam Barnes had 20 points and 11 rebounds, while Anna Moore added 10 points and 10 rebounds. Anna Walther chipped in with 15 points in the win.

Belchertown 53, Holyoke Catholic 27 - The Orioles (6-5) placed three players in double figures to win their fifth straight game and move over the .500 mark for the first time.

Téa Spellacy scored a game-high 12 points for Belchertown, while Jessica Karrasch (11 points, 13 rebounds) and Marissa Kopacz (10 points, 12 boards) each had double-doubles.

Jessica Burke and Jillian Lund played superb defense in shutting down the perimeter.

Kyra Robins led the Gaels (5-6) with eight points.

Frontier Regional 41, Smith Academy 28 - Olivia Riordan and Amanda Calvo both scored 10 points as the Red Hawks (6-3, 6-3 Franklin South) extended their winning streak to four with the home victory.

Alyssa Klepacki had 17 points and 16 boards for the Falcons (5-5, 4-5), while Amanda Hebert (seven points) played a strong all-around game.

Mahar 48, Easthampton 45 - The Eagles (10-2, 7-2 Franklin South) led 34-26 entering the fourth quarter but Jill Valley scored 16 of her game-high 28 points and Janelle Juskiewicz added six of her 14 to spark the comeback for the Senators (10-0, 9-0 North), who qualified for the postseason.

Elizabeth Whitney had 16 points and 14 rebounds, while Haley Domina had 14 for Easthampton, which led by eight with three minutes left.

Domina held Sam Parker (12.1 points per game) to one free throw.

Palmer 45, Hampshire Regional 44 - Sarah Kober had 14 points and 11 rebounds, while Anna Dziok added 12 points and Chelsea Moussette eight but the Raiders (3-6, 1-1 Bi-County East) had their three-game winning streak snapped on the road.

Hampshire had a chance to win the game in the closing seconds but Kober was fouled on a breakaway before getting a shot off. The Raiders then missed inside off the ensuing inbounds pass from underneath the basket.

Ware 60, South Hadley 36 - The Tigers (5-4, 1-1 Bi-County Central) were slow out of the gate and fell on the road to the Indians (10-1, 1-0), who qualified for the postseason.

Ware led 20-2 after one, 33-9 at the half and 54-15 after three.

Janelle Seitz had eight points for South Hadley.

Boys basketball

Northampton 61, New Leadership 51 - Jake Ross scored a career-high 24 points with a career-high seven 3-pointers as the Blue Devils (4-6) won at home.

Jarred Neumann had 23 points, 11 rebounds and five assists, and held Joe Crapps (18 points) to five first-half points. Ross held Stephen Jackson (15 points) to one point in the second half.

Minnechaug 65, Belchertown 53 - Tyler Verville and Zach Parsons both notched double-doubles in the independent road loss for the Orioles (8-3).

Verville and Parsons both scored a team-best 13 points. Verville had 10 assists and five steals, while Parsons grabbed 12 rebounds.

Eric Adzima also reached double figures for Belchertown with 12 points.

Mahar 70, Easthampton 54 - Kenny Lumpkin scored a career-high 16 points, but the Eagles (8-3, 6-3 Hampshire East) lost at home.

Senior guard Casey White also chipped in 16 points for Easthampton, while Chris Starcun added 12.
