Granby boys basketball falls at Hoophall Classic
The Granby boys basketball team couldn't keep up with St. Joseph's up-tempo offense and fell 66-52 at the Hoophall Classic at Springfield College Monday night.
Corey Baker had 12 points to lead the Rams (6-3). Aaron Gaj added 10 points and 11 rebounds, while Jesse Molin added 10 points.
Granby coach Tim Sheehan was pleased despite the result.
"It was an awesome experience," he said. "I told them to enjoy the experience. Our program has earned the right to participate. We wanted to make sure we went out and competed. We played hard and battled. We just didn't make open shots. We played into St. Joe's style trying to play fast-paced. Their game speed was a little different than we were used to."
Gateway Regional 52, Holyoke Catholic 51 - Austin Cook scored 20 points to go with six rebounds as the Gators (2-7, 1-3 Bi-County South) won a thriller in Huntington.
Gateway led for much of the game, but Gaels' senior Nate Powers scored 20 of his 22 points in the second half as Holyoke Catholic (2-6, 1-2) took control in the fourth quarter only to see the Gators pull ahead for good down the stretch.
Zach Mackechnie added 10 points in the win, while Curtis Dowers had five points, four assists and three steals.
John McCoy scored eight points for the Gaels.
Powers' performance moved him to within 32 points of reaching 1,000 for his career. Holyoke Catholic hosts South Hadley on Wednesday night at 7:30.
Athol 52, Hopkins Academy 49 - The winless Golden Hawks led 40-29 after the third quarter, but couldn't close out the victory on the road and fell to 0-11 (0-9 Hampshire West).
Andrew Bemben led Hopkins with 21 points and 13 rebounds while Satchel Texiera added 17 points and 12 boards.
