Hampshire boys basketball falls to Mahar in Hoophall Classic

The Hampshire Regional boys basketball team struggled in the first and third quarters and fell 69-43 to Mahar in its debut at the Spalding Hoophall Classic at Springfield College Thursday.

"It was an unbelievable experience," Hampshire coach Claud Salomao said. "We came out in the beginning of the first and played tight. We took good shots they just weren't falling."

The Senators (7-1) outscored Hampshire 16-6 in the first and 20-4 in the third. The Raiders (3-6) were outscored 18-16 in the second, and outscored Mahar 17-15 in the fourth.

"That's a tough veteran team," Salomao said. "They made plays. We just had a tough time keeping up with the them in the third."

Keith Cotnoir finished 18 points on 8-of-19 shooting. The senior also had seven rebounds. Mitch Ouimette had eight points with two 3-pointers, while Shane Andrews chipped in with seven points.

Three players reached double figures for Mahar. Phil DiPhillipo led all scorers with 25 points, six rebounds and four assists. Jessie LaCroix and Josef Whitman each had 12 points.

The Senators forced 20 turnovers and led by as much as 30 in the fourth quarter.

Granby 63, Belchertown 58 - The Rams (6-2, 2-1 Bi-County North) placed three players in double figures in the key league victory in Belchertown.

Corey Baker led the team with 20 points. Tyler Ellard had 18 and Andy Gifford added 12 for Granby, which is 5-1 in games decided by single digits.

Zach Parsons put in a game-high 24 with 13 rebounds for the Orioles (8-2, 2-2), while Eric Adzima added 10.

Chicopee Comp 49, South Hadley 45 - The Tigers (2-5) could not hold off the Colts despite having a nine point lead at the half. Jon Crespo and TJ Fitzell both scored 10 points in the losing effort. The Tigers were outscored 30-15 in the second half.
