Amherst girls basketball wins fifth straight

The Amherst Regional girls basketball stepped on the pedal in the second quarter and pulled away to beat Minnechaug 61-47 Monday in Amherst.

The Hurricanes outscored the Falcons 26-7 in the second en route to their fifth straight victory.

Brianna Leonard had 20 points and five steals, while Victoria Stewart added 17 points and five steals.

Forbasaw Nkamebo recorded a double-double of 12 points and 10 rebounds and Kristen Ferola (five steals) added 11 points in the win.

Frontier Regional 51, Athol 47 - The Red Hawks withstood a late Red Raider barrage and held on to win at home.

Amanda Calvo led Frontier (4-3, 4-3 Franklin) with 15 points, giving her 37 in her last two games after scoring 33 in her first five games.

Courtney Parent (10 rebounds) and Sydney Judge each scored 11 points. Judge was strong defensively as well, holding Athol point guard Shelby Bronnes scoreless.

Smith Academy 62, Turners Falls 32 - Cassidy Snyder and Alyssa Klepacki each scored 26 points as the Falcons (5-3, 4-3 Franklin South) cruised past the Indians in Hatfield.

Snyder's 26 was a career-high, while Klepacki, who had 10 of hers from the line, passed the 25-point milestone for the second time this season.

Northampton 41, Chicopee 36 - In a game with plenty of missed shots by both team, Samantha Barnes was dominant for the Blue Devils.

The senior center grabbed an eye-popping 31 rebounds to go with her 21 points as Northampton (6-2) won on the road.

Hampshire Regional 73, Southwick 9 - Sarah Kober fell two steals shy of a triple-double as she led the Raiders (3-5) past the Rams in Westhampton.

Kober had 15 points, 11 rebounds and eight steals all in the first half. It was Kober's seventh double-double in eight games.

Hampshire guard Chelsea Moussette (nine assists) knocked down two 3-pointers as part of her eight points.

Granby 47, New Leadership 25 - The Rams (7-1) outscored the Wildcats (5-5) 22-10 in the third quarter to pull away from a 15-8 halftime lead in Springfield.

Meghan Sullivan had 12 points and seven rebounds, while Alyssa Boardway added 10 points and seven rebounds for Granby.

Brooke Labrie added six points and six steals, while Lily Cebula also had seven rebounds.

St. Mary 38, Smith Vocational 29 - Despite Nashaelid Cinton's career-high nine points, the Vikings fell at home.

Smith (1-7, 1-4 Tri-County) led 11-9 after the first quarter, but scored just two points in the second quarter as the Saints took control.

Belchertown 49, McCann 30 - Téa Spellacy's strong stretch continued as the Orioles won their third straight game.

Spellacy had 15 points for Belchertown (4-5). Marissa Kopacz added 10 points and 13 rebounds, while Jillian Cavanaugh added 12 boards to go with her six points.

Palmer 55, Holyoke Catholic 36 - Kyra Robins had seven points, while Danielle Easton and Melissa LaFlamme each had six points but the Gaels (4-5) fell at Holyoke Community College.

Gateway Regional 47, Pathfinder 32 - Chelsea Merritt had 17 points, while Chelsi Derrig added nine as the Gators (5-1, 5-0 Tri-County) won on the road.
