Easthampton, Hampshire snap losing streaks in boys basketball

Streaks came and went Friday night.

The Easthampton and Hampshire Regional boys basketball teams each snapped two-game losing streaks. Casey White had 22 points as Easthampton beat Pioneer regional 60-52.

Keith Cotnoir's double-double of 19 points and 14 rebounds spurred Hampshire to a 50-38 win over Southwick.

And undefeated Belchertown was handed its first loss of the season. The Orioles fell 57-50 at Palmer for their first setback after eight straight wins to start the season.

Amherst Regional 59, Sci-Tech 46 - Three players for the Hurricanes (5-3) notched double-doubles in the comeback home victory.

Norris Cuevas-Nova scored a game-high 19 points with 10 rebounds, Josh Whitaker had 17 points and a team-best 13 boards, and Tchuijo Nkamebo added 10 points and 10 boards.

Amherst trailed by six at the half, but outscored Sci-Tech 35-16 in the second half.

Easthampton 60, Pioneer Regional 52 - White's game-high 22 points and Chris Starcun's double-double led the Eagles (6-2, 4-2 Hampshire East) to the home victory.

Starcun scored 17 points with a team-best 13 rebounds. Jeff VanOudenhove had 13 points, three steals and two assists, while White and Sam Garcia each pulled down nine boards.

Smith Academy 85, Athol 64 - Three players scored at least 20 points as the Falcons (7-1, 6-0 Hampshire West) rolled on the road.

Seaver Rickert (13 rebounds) scored a career-high 26 points, while Keith Natale (16 rebounds) and Mat Sulda (seven assist) each had 20 points.

Derek McMahon added 15 points and five assists in the win.

Roy Hamel had 20 points for the Red Raiders (1-6, 0-5 East).

Hampshire Regional 50, Southwick 38 - The Raiders (3-4, 1-1 Bi-County North) used a strong defense and a fast break to snap a two-game losing skid with the victory in Southwick.

Cotnoir had 19 points and 14 rebounds, while Shane Andrews added 13 points for Hampshire, which outscored the Rams (4-4, 0-2) 22-5 in the third to pull away from a 24-15 halftime deficit.

Frontier Regional 81, Mohawk Trail 51 - Four players reached double digits as the Red Hawks surpassed 80 points for the first time in 57 games.

Paul Decker had 18 points, Ryan Hoar had 13 points and 15 rebounds, Justin Mieczkowski added 12 points, eight rebounds and five assists, and Dan Kieras chipped in with 10 points.

Frontier last reached 80 when it scored 87 points in a win over Smith Academy on Feb. 2, 2009.

Palmer 57, Belchertown 50 - The Orioles (8-1, 2-1 Bi-County North) scored just six points in the final quarter and took their first loss of the season in Palmer.

Zach Parsons led all scorers with 25 points and 13 rebounds, but just six of his points came in the second half. Mike Tommila had 11 points, nine boards and four blocks for Belchertown.

Commerce 58, Northampton 52 - Freshman Jake Ross scored a game-high 21 points with nine rebounds for the Blue Devils (2-5) in the home loss.

Jarrod Neumann had 10 points and 19 boards, while Wilson Sadowski added 10 points for Hamp, which made 11 3-pointers to none for Commerce.

Alex Lopez matched Ross with 21 for the unbeaten Red Raiders (7-0).

Renaissance 75, Gateway Regional 38 - Austin Cook scored a game-high 15 points to go with 10 rebounds and five steals, but it wasn't enough for the Gators (1-7, 0-3 Bi-County South) at home.

Calvin Dowers added eight points, while Justin Edinger had seven in the loss.

Greenfield 39, Hopkins Academy 19 - Satchel Teixiera had nine rebounds to go with four points as the Golden Hawks (0-8, 0-6 Hampshire West) lost on the road.

Tim Knightly scored a team-high six points for Hopkins.

McCann Tech 48, Smith Vocational 46 - Allan Rivera scored 22 points but it wasn't enough as the Vikings (3-2, 0-2 Tri-County) dropped their second straight with the loss in North Adams.

Jordan Castillo added 11 points for Smith Voke.

Putnam 62, South Hadley 37 - Trevor McKenna scored 10 points, but the Tigers (1-4) fell in Springfield.

Jon Crespo added seven points in the loss.

Prep schools Boys basketball

Berkshire School 77, Williston 69 - DonQuale Williams scored 21 points to go with five rebounds and five assists, but the Wildcats (3-6) fell at home.

Keegan Dunlop added 13 points, while Mike Moran finished with 12.
