Smith Academy boys basketball dominates Mohawk
The Smith Academy boys basketball team dominated Mohawk Trail in the second half en route to the 73-29 victory in Hatfield Tuesday.
The Falcons outscored the Indians 43-9 in the second half as they improved to 6-1 overall, 5-0 in the Hampshire West.
Keith Natale scored 21 points and had 14 rebounds. Mat Sulda led all scorers with 23 points, while Derek McMahon had added 11 points and eight assists in the win.
Amherst Regional 64, Sabis 56 - The Hurricanes (4-3) raced out to a 12-point lead after one quarter and held on for an independent home victory.
Fahmi Farah and Tchuijo Nkamebo scored 12 points apiece to pace Amherst. Josh Whitaker added 11, while Tyler Peake, James Sowers and Norris Cuevas-Nova had nine each.
Northampton 59, Agawam 43 - Jarrod Neumann had 17 points and 14 rebounds as Hamp used a strong second quarter to take control against the Brownies at home.
Mack Hale added 16 points for Hamp (2-4).
Agawam made more 3-pointers (seven) than 2s (six), but not enough to beat the Devils.
Palmer 59, Granby 56 - Aaron Gaj's double-double of 10 points and 10 rebounds wasn't quite enough as the Rams (4-2, 0-1 Bi-County North) lost a see-saw affair at home in their league opener.
Tyler Ellard led Granby with 15 points to go with six boards and four steals. Corey Baker had 11 points, four rebounds, four assists and three steals in the loss.
Belchertown 53, Southwick 38 - Zach Parsons and Mike Tommila both registered double-doubles as the Orioles (8-0, 2-0 Bi-County North) remained perfect with the home win.
Parsons scored a game-high 19 points with 11 rebounds, while Tommila had 12 points and 11 boards.
Renaissance 64, Holyoke Catholic 53 - Nate Powers scored 33 points, grabbed 20 rebounds and blocked seven shots, but the Gaels (2-5, 1-1 Bi-County South) allowed a 10-point halftime advantage to slip away in the home loss.
Joe Kass added 10 for Catholic, which was outscored 28-14 in the final quarter.
Mahar 62, Hopkins Academy 28 - Satchel Teixeira led the Golden Hawks (0-7, 0-5 Hampshire West) with nine points in the home loss.
Andrew Omer scored seven points and Jacob Kosakowski added six for Hopkins.
Ware 74, Gateway Regional 42 - Austin Cook scored 12 points, but the Gators (1-6, 0-2 Bi-County South) couldn't keep pace with the Indians (1-5, 1-1) in Ware.
Curtis Dowers had eight points in the loss.
Jacob Hurlburt scored a game-high 25 points for Ware.
Longmeadow 67, South Hadley 52 - TJ Fitzell had 13 points as the Tigers (1-3) fell on the road.
