Candle cited as cause of Westhampton house fire

WESTHAMPTON - A candle caused a house fire that displaced two residents at a Burt Road home Monday night, according to the Westhampton Fire Department.

Firefighters from several area communities responded to the fire at around 10:30 p.m., putting out the blaze in about 15 minutes, Westhampton Fire Chief Christopher Norris said. No one was injured and the fire caused an estimated $80,000 in damages.

Firefighters say a mother and son lived at the home and are now staying with friends in the area. The property is owned by Adrienne M. Hornby, according to land records.

"The cause originated in the living room and was from a candle being tipped over," said Norris, who investigated the fire along with the state Fire Marshall's Office.

Norris said the candle had been mounted on a wall and appeared to have fallen to the floor where it caught a carpet on fire. Firefighters said the blaze caused heavy smoke damage.

"They had to do a lot of ventilating," Northampton Deputy Fire Chief Duane Nichols said.

Besides Westhampton, firefighters from Northampton, Williamsburg and several Hilltowns, including Chesterfield, Huntington and Russell assisted with firefighters and equipment.
