Accidents, injuries at rush hour Thursday in Northampton

NORTHAMPTON - A city man was struck in a crosswalk and an 11-year-old girl was injured in a separate motor vehicle accident which occurring within 10 minutes of each other Thursday night in Northampton.

Meantime, police responded to another accident as well as a disabled motor vehicle backing up traffic from the Interstate 91 on-ramp off Bridge Street during rush hour.

Faustin Correa, 52, of West Street, was taken to Baystate Medical Center in Springfield with non-life-threatening head lacerations after he was struck by a motorist in a crosswalk at Conz and Smith streets about 5:15 p.m., according to police.

Police said they fined Stanley Aksamit, 60, of Turners Falls, with a $100 fine for failure to yield to a pedestrian in a crosswalk. It was raining at the time. Police said Aksamit was traveling south when he struck Correa and sent him to the ground.

"The driver said he didn't even see the guy," said Police Lt. Michael Patenaude. "He just felt the impact."

Across downtown at Myrtle and State streets, an 11-year-old Florence girl was taken to Cooley Dickinson Hospital with minor facial injuries she suffered from the deployment of an airbag in a two-car crash. No one was cited in that accident, which occurred just 10 minutes before the Conz Street incident, police said.

Five minutes before the State Street accident, police had responded to King Street where two cars collided trying to enter and leave the Pride gasoline state near Damon Road. That accident caused less than $1,000 in damage and resulted in no injuries or citations.

And at 5:26 p.m., police were called to the I-91 on-ramp off Bridge Street where a disabled motor vehicle was blocking traffic in the area. Police spent about a half hour at the scene and the car was towed away.
