Jones Library to step up effort to hire new staffer

AMHERST - An effort to hire someone for a vacant post that coordinates adult programming at the Jones Library, ensures homebound residents have access to materials, and recruits volunteers, is being given priority.

Trustees this week accepted a subcommittee recommendation to fill the position expeditiously because of its many roles and responsibilities, said Trustees President Sarah McKee.

"These are comprehensive and vital to the library's excellence," McKee said.

Library Director Sharon Sharry said Friday that the job description is still being developed by staff and must be approved by trustees, at which time the position will be advertised.

Sharry said it is important to bring adult programming back to the library, pointing to the success of the "Three Cups of Tea" community read done a few years ago. These type of community events could become annual celebrations, Sharry said.

"Here in Amherst we are surrounded by local authors, musicians and other performers who are very excited to share their talents with others," Sharry said. "The Jones is the perfect place for these types of events to happen."

Sharry said she will be looking for an enthusiastic and imaginative team player who will understand what patrons need and want from the library.

The adult services librarian will also be responsible for overseeing the growing collection of eBooks that are needed for Nook and Kindles, along with making sure residents who can't get to the library still have access to books, music and videos. The adult services librarian will also be in charge of finding volunteers to help staff the building.

The position has been empty since Beth Girshman, who was in the position for 28 years, left in January.

A deliberate decision was made by trustees not to fill the position until a new director was in place. Sharry began her tenure Oct. 3.
