CHESTNUT HILL - Midway through the second half Monday, the Boston College players were putting their hands on their knees and breathing heavily, while the University of Massachusetts players were high-fiving.

The Minutemen's up-tempo offense and depth wore down the Eagles quickly allowing UMass to crush BC 82-46 at Conte Forum.

Leading by 11 at halftime, the Minutemen went for the kill right away in the second half. They scored the first four points of the half on two free throws by Terrell Vinson and a jump shot by Freddie Riley and the lead kept building from there en route to the biggest margin of victory in the history of the rivalry between the two programs.

"We continued to keep the tempo and really get after them defensively," UMass coach Derek Kellogg said. "They fought hard for a while and our age and experience basically took over. When we made some shots and really kept the pressure on them, the game plan came through pretty strong tonight."

The Minutemen (4-0) dominated every facet of the game. They hassled the Eagles (1-2)  into 23 turnovers and won the rebounding battle, 46-31.

"Not much to say obviously, to get beat as badly as we did in every aspect of the game," BC coach Steve Donahue said. "UMass played terrific and made shots, challenged and unchallenged. ... The tempo of the game had a lot to do with it."

Sophomore point guard Chaz Williams saluted the team's strength and conditioning coach for preparing the players to play this style.

"We have to thank (strength) coach Rich Hogans for getting our bodies ready for this," Williams said. "This is the style of play coach wanted to play. All the conditioning we did this summer is starting to pay off."

Ten different Minutemen scored in the game. Riley had a breakout game for the Minutemen with 14 points, while Williams led UMass with 16 points, five assists and four rebounds. Freshman Cady Lalanne reached double figures for the first time with 11 points, including a 3-pointer, while Jesse Morgan added 11 points as well.

Patrick Heckman led BC with 11 points, including nine free throws.

BC jumped out quickly opening an early 16-8 lead on the strength of 3-point and free-throw shooting. But UMass' tempo seemed to wear the Eagles down as BC's shots fell a lot less frequently as intermission approached.

Runs of 12-2 and 7-0 gave the Minutemen a 37-25 lead before Matt Humphrey hit one of two free throws right before halftime.

"This was a big game for us," Riley said. "It's a rivalry game. They beat us the last couple of years. They have a younger team and we have an older team. We just played hard and we got a win."

UMass will try to extend its winning streak in the Bahamas when it faces No. 25 Florida State at 4:30 p.m. Thursday  in the inaugural Battle 4 Atlantis Tournament.
