Doris O'Kane, of Amherst

AMHERST - Doris May O'Kane, 88, of Applewood at Amherst, died Friday, Nov. 18, 2011, at the Cooley Dickinson Hospital.

She was born Jan. 16, 1923, in North Bergen, N.J., daughter of the late Adolph and May (Springsteen) Michel.

She graduated from Cliffside Park High School in 1940 and then attended the Katherine Gibbs Secretarial School in New York City.

Doris married Charles P. O'Kane , a musician, on June 1, 1943. During the 1940s, she accompanied Charlie on tour with the U.S. Army Band and then with the Les Elgart and Ted Lewis bands. They eventually settled in Tenafly, N.J., where they lived for 20 years and raised two daughters. Doris worked as a secretary/administrative assistant on and off during her life and did volunteer work for animal welfare organizations. Most recently she lived at Applewood at Amherst since 2000.

She is survived by her daughters, Eileen O'Kane of Northampton, and Kathleen O'Kane of Wendell; and two grandchildren, Nolan and Clara Gardner.
