Jamie Hoyle powers Amherst Regional to volleyball final

WILLIAMSTOWN - The Mount Greylock volleyball team used Elise Masson at libero to bolster the back line in preparation for Amherst Regional on Thursday. But that's not where the Mounties had trouble.

The Hurricanes' Jamie Hoyle crashed the net relentlessly to the tune of 24 kills, three aces and 17 digs, sending Greylock home with a 25-23, 25-19, 20-25, 25-19 loss in the semifinals of the Western Massachusetts Division 2 Tournament.

Third-seeded Amherst (16-4) will play No. 1 Longmeadow 18-1) in the championship game Saturday at 6:30 p.m. at Holyoke Community College.

The Mounties (No. 2, 19-1) had trouble with Hoyle from the start, absorbing five straight kills from the Amherst senior. Hoyle had 10 kills and an ace by the end of the first game.

Hoyle was so dominant that she commanded attention from a combination of Kelsey Goodwin, Heather Duda and Michala Dean.

"We were definitely pumped up," Hoyle said. "We knew (Greylock) was undefeated so we had to come in strong and do whatever we could do win."

Greylock's biggest strength is play from service but the play at the net completely took away any chance of the Mounties playing to another part of the court. Michala Dean and Chelsea Dean give Greylock its most potent offense from either the middle or the perimeter of the court but play rarely gravitated toward Chelsea, and Michala was mostly stuck following Hoyle.

Yet Chelsea Dean still led the Mounties with 13 kills, two aces, while Michala Dean added four kills, two aces, one dig.

While Goodwin doesn't have the height that Michala Dean does, her defense on Hoyle was just as effective, allowing Greylock to take the third game.

With Hoyle bottled up for at least the third game, the Mounties worked their way back into the match behind scoring from Masson and Goodwin, who each had a pair of aces in the fourth, while the Dean sisters had a pair of kills.

"We know Jamie's going to get her kills as long as we can get her the ball," Amherst coach Kacey Schmitt said. "That requires great passing on the back row and I thought we played really well, receiving some tough serves from them. We were able to get the ball to (setter Sarah Krasnik), who was setting the ball wonderfully, could get the ball to our hitters."

Athena Donta had 11 digs and six kills, while Krasnik had 33 assists for Amherst.

Shannon Napier added six digs and Greta Devoney had four assists and five digs.
