Mahar sweeps Easthampton girls volleyball in tourney quarterfinal

ORANGE - After winning the first set of its Western Massachusetts Division 3 Girls Volleyball Tournament quarterfinal, Mahar found itself in a precarious situation in the second set against Easthampton on Monday night.

The seventh-seeded Eagles jumped out to an early lead against the second-seeded Senators and were looking to tie the match at one set apiece. Mahar slowly chipped away at the deficit and eventually tied the set late before edging out the Eagles for a 25-23 win.

Mahar went on to take the third set and moved on to the semifinals with a 25-18, 25-23, 25-18 victory at the Grzesik-Bixby Gymnasium Complex.

The Senators (14-5) will host St. Joseph's on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. The 11th-seeded Crusaders knocked off both sixth-seeded Turners Falls and third-seeded Wahconah Regional.

The Senators rode Sabrina Silva to the first-set win as the Mahar junior finished with seven kills and one block in the opening set. Easthampton (11-11) shook off the early loss and bounced back with a strong start to the second set. Moneerachena Nhem and Haley Nicol each won three service points early to help push the Eagles to an early 8-1 advantage, and after three more service points from Elizabeth Whitney and two more from Kellie Hutton, Easthampton found itself with a 14-5 edge.

But it was Silva that got the Senators on the right track. After three errors early in the set, Silva scored a kill to pick up Mahar's sixth point. That started a run that saw Mahar win eight of the next 10 points behind the serving of Sam Parker and Allie Barnes.

Easthampton pushed its lead to 20-16, but the Senators chipped away and when Silva picked up her fifth kill of the second set, the Easthampton lead had been cut to 21-20. A pair of aces by Caitriona Cronin gave Mahar its first lead of the set and, despite a pair of service errors, Mahar finally won the set when Whitney had a hit sail out beyond the service line.

"I knew that we needed to get that momentum going into the second game and I think that we did do that," Easthampton coach Molly Jacobson said. "We came out pretty big in the second set, but unfortunately, something we've struggled with all season is maintaining leads when we get leads. It was a bummer losing, but it was a lot of fun to watch and this was the best match that we played all year."

Silva finished with 14 kills, while Parker added 17 assists and eight kills. Cronin registered seven kids, and Katherine Donelan notched three kills.

The Eagles had a solid game defensively and Whitney led the way with 14 digs. Kayla McFarland finished with eight digs and three kills, and Hutton registered four digs. Nhem finished with 10 assists and seven digs, and Nicol added three aces and two kills.
