Power outages wreak havoc with high school tourney schedules

With power down in communities throughout western Massachusetts, the first week of high school tournament action will likely need at least another day to get sorted out.

The seeds for the Western Massachusetts Division 1 & 2 Field Hockey Tournaments were scheduled to be released Monday, but the meeting at Northampton High School was postponed to today at 1 p.m.

Tournament director Diane Lussier said she likely would have released the seeds with or without today's meeting taking place.

"The work is pretty much all done, I was able to do that Monday using the Walker system to set where everyone fits," she said. "I just need to have the committee go over it before the announcement."

Northampton athletic director Jim Miller sent out an email Monday night confirming the rescheduled meeting, despite the city's schools being closed today.

The next challenge will be to determine when the games can actually be played. Lussier's goal would be to start play Thursday.

"We're putting it out to the schools that may not make it back to school until late this week or even next week," Lussier said. "We need to know what works best for them, and adjust accordingly."

The scheduled dates for the semifinals at Mount Holyoke College are next Tuesday and Wednesday. Lussier said she's still planning on those days, and she's holding out hope for the finals to be played on Friday, Nov. 11.

"At this point, the (early round) games can be staggered, but it all depends on the facilities," she said. "We may have to look at alternate or neutral sites. ... I don't know what schools don't allow games on a day with no school, so it depends on the individual schools and the athletic directors."

Girls volleyball

The seed meeting for girls volleyball is scheduled for Wednesday, but some teams still need to finish the regular season.

"I talked to the tournament director (Deb Loomer) Sunday, and she didn't have power," Amherst Regional coach Kacey Schmitt said. "I went online and got the information for her. But there are still some teams to play. This is bizarre - I never before had to worry about cancellations for volleyball."

Schmitt, whose team completed its regular season Friday, said the meeting is still on schedule, but is highly skeptical.

"I can't imagine having it at that time unless they look at games and find they don't count much toward the seeding," she said. "The MIAA will have to sort all of this out."

Soccer

The boys and girls soccer seed meeting is expected to go on as planned Thursday at 1 p.m. at Granby High. But there are still two days' worth of regular season games scheduled.

As of Monday night, the MIAA is holding on to a regular season cutoff time of 6 p.m. Wednesday. Games that aren't completed before that time are likely to be declared no contest and won't count against a team's record.

"I'm in conversation with the MIAA, and nothing's been defined in terms of the direction of the way things are going to go," said tournament director Jonathan Cavallo, the vice principal at Granby. "There are states of emergency and many schools are out all week, so it's hard to know anything."

At least six teams are on the bubble to qualify for postseason, but with many fields unplayable, Cavallo said the MIAA might grant a hardship exception for those teams.

The tournaments were already scheduled to begin no earlier than Saturday, so Cavallo doesn't expect any change in the timeline.

"I don't think this will affect the games themselves," he said. "We've secured sites that are turf, and by next week I would think the snow will all be melted."

Golf

All three divisions postponed their state golf tournaments to next Monday.

The Division 2 championship at Hickory Ridge Country Club in Amherst includes sectional champion Granby and runner-up Belchertown.
