Storm postpones Halloween in some area communities
NORTHAMPTON - Municipal officials around the region are suggesting parents skip trick-or-treating tonight, due to the hazardous conditions oustside in the wake of the weekend storm that downed power lines and trees on sidewalks and roadways.
Officials in Northampton are suggesting that people postpone celebrating Halloween until Saturday night. The annual Rag Shag Parade in Florence has also been cancelled.
Easthampton Mayor Michael Tautznik posted a message on his Facebook page urging that parents not go out on the streets tonight because of the dangers with utility wires, trees, and snowbanks.
South Hadley officials are "strongly recommending" that families not go trick or treating tonight.
Children who want to trick or treat in Amherst will be able to do so Sunday evening.
Town Manager John Musante issued a memo this afternoon encouraging families to stay in tonight and wait until Nov. 6 to partake in the usual Halloween activities.
The decision was made because nearly two-thirds of homes remain without electricity and safety issues continue to plague the community, he said, including many downed power lines and fallen trees.
Amherst remains in a state of emergency.
