South Hadley field hockey qualifies for postseason

The defending champs will defend their title ... sort of.

The South Hadley field hockey team beat East Longmeadow 4-0 Friday and qualified for the Western Massachusetts Division 2 championship.

The Tigers are the defending Division 1 champs, but because they are no longer a coed team, they will play in the Division 2 tournament.

South Hadley (7-6-2, 5-1-2 Central) took a 1-0 lead at intermission and then pulled away in the second half.

Merry Kocot (two goals, one assist) and Olivia Szydziak (one goal, two assists) each had multiple points, while Dominique Wilkins had a goal.

Liz Menard made six saves, including a diving one with five seconds left to preserve the shutout.

Smith Academy 5, Greenfield 1 - Kelly Ryan, Emi Barker (two assists), Danielle Duseau, Ali Moriarty and Alyssa Woodward each scored as the Falcons (7-5-2, 4-1-1 North)) cruised in Greenfield.

Lauren Bradford made four saves in the win.

Pioneer Regional 1, Amherst Regional 0 - Katherine Kayser-Hirsh made 13 saves but the Hurricanes (2-7-3) fell in Northfield.
