Northampton field hockey rebounds with shutout at West Springfield

The Northampton field hockey team bounced back from its first loss of the season with a dominating 3-0 win at West Springfield on Thursday night.

The Blue Devils (14-1-1, 8-0 Central) clinched at least a share of the league title with the victory.

"This is probably the most complete game they've played all year," said coach Kathleen Ralls, whose team was coming off a 3-0 loss to undefeated Frontier Regional at home Tuesday. "They were ready to go tonight. They played great."

Olivia Cotton had one goal and one assist, while Adrienne Pascucci and Meghan Harrington scored once. Shannon O'Leary was credited with two assists.

Mary Greco posted five saves to earn her eighth shutout of the season.

Ralls said juniors Wilona Ryan and Leah Fagan and sophomore Sam Krumpholz keyed the team's strong play.

"I couldn't take them out of the game," she said.

Northampton will close out the season with two games next week. It hosts Palmer at Williston Northampton on Monday at 7 p.m. for senior night and then wraps up the regular season at South Hadley on Wednesday at 6 p.m.

The Tigers (6-6-2, 4-1-2 Central) could force a tie for the league by winning out and having the Blue Devils lose to Palmer.

Frontier Regional 6, Cathedral 0 - Jordan Rowe scored three goals, while Emily Williams (assist), Kacey Roberts and Taryn Marquis each had one as the Red Hawks (13-0-2) cruised in Springfield.

Sydney Judge had two assists, and Brie Cook and Hannah Woodring each had one. Gwen Thayer made three saves in the shutout.

Agawam 1, Amherst 0 - Katherine Kayser-Hirsh made 13 saves, but the Hurricane (2-7-3, 1-4-2 South) lost on the road.
