In a battle of cross country unbeatens Tuesday, the Amherst Regional boys fell one place short in a 28-29 loss to Ludlow.

"It was an incredibly exciting and intense race," Hurricanes coach Chris Gould said. "We were pretty upset with the outcome, but Ludlow's a great team."

Dan Crowley's course record of 16 minutes, 17 seconds took first place for the Lions (10-0, 5-0).

Amherst (10-1, 3-1 Valley North) put five runners in the top eight. Jesse Coull was its top finisher in third at 16:47.

"We knew we had to avoid a top-3 sweep, and we did that when Jesse got third," Gould said. "We thought we could get in six before their first four, but it didn't happen."

Both squads also beat Mohawk at the meet. Amherst won by a score of 15-50.

In the girls meet, Audrey Gould shattered the Ludlow course record by 22 seconds as she covered the 3.1-mile course in 20:49.

If not for Gould, teammate Mel Davoney would have broke the record, previously set by South Hadley's Caroline Sullivan (21:11) last year. Davoney finished in 20:52 as the Hurrcanes beat the Lions 23-33, and bested Mohawk 18-40.
