Amherst runners get off to a fast start

The Amherst Regional boys and girls cross country teams got their season off on the right foot Thursday.

The boys defeated Longmeadow 20-42 and East Longmeadow 15-50 while the girls beat Longmeadow 26-30, and East Longmeadow 16-47.

Ben Gagne-Maynard won the 2.55-mile boys race in 13 minutes, 56 seconds but the Hurricanes took the next seven spots in nearly identical times.

James Traester, Dylan Wight and Gabe Fishman were second, third and fourth in 14:12 respectively. Steven Kalt, Jesse Coull and Ryan Mathers were fifth, sixth and seventh in 14:13 respectively.

Camille Blackman won the girls race in 15:00.

Audrey Gould of Amherst was second in 16:07. Mel Devoney was fourth in 16:34 while Emmy Zimmerman finished fifth (16:51), Sara Vannah seventh (17:09) and Kate O'Brien ninth (17:29).

Both the Amherst boys and girls are 2-0 overall and in the North Division.
