New coach gets first win
Friday, September 2, 2011Callie Sweigart scored two goals to lead the University of Massachusetts field hockey team over Vermont 4-2 on Monday at Moulton Winder Field in Burlington, Vt.
The victory was the first win for new coach Carla Tagliente. UMass lost to Boston College 5-0 on Saturday.
The Minutewomen took the lead over Vermont halfway through the first half with two goals just 43 seconds apart.
Sweigart scored off assists from Christine Cutry and Alexa Sikalis. Junior Kim Young scored the second goal at 18:47 from the top of the circle off another assist from Sikalis, making the game 2-0 in favor of UMass.
Freshman Renee Suter notched her first career goal in the 22nd minute when she received a long pass from Sweigart, eventually beating the goalie 1-on-1 to make it a three-goal lead for the Minutewomen.
Alesha Windall made four saves in goal to earn the 41st win of her career.
UMass heads to Iowa City this weekend for two games against Kent State and the host Hawkeyes.
