Mistakes doom Granby in softball semifinal loss to Turners Falls
CHICOPEE - The Granby softball team reached its third straight Western Massachusetts Division 3 Tournament semifinal this year.
And for the third straight year, the Rams' season ended with a loss to juggernaut Turners Falls on Friday afternoon.
Granby struggled through a 10-run third inning that included four errors en route to a 14-2 loss at Elms College.
"We can prepare as hard as we can, but when we get out on the field, we have to make plays," Rams third-year coach Gary Casey said. "We gave them that third inning with four errors and the mental errors we were making on top of that. You can't do that against a team that has won 10 western Mass. championships in the last 11 years."
No. 1 Turners Falls (22-0) advanced to play No. 7 Mount Everett (16-6) for the western Massachusetts title at 1 p.m. Saturday at the UMass Softball Complex. The Indians have won six straight Division 3 championships and eight consecutive sectional titles overall. No. 4 Granby finished 16-4.
Indians' pitcher Emily Mailloux tossed a perfect game in the teams' regular-season matchup and extended her perfect run another inning before junior Brie Englebrecht walked to lead off the second.
But Mailloux otherwise continued to have Granby's number and left with a 14-0 lead after five no-hit innings.
Turners led 2-0 after the second inning, but put the game away in the Rams' nightmare third when it sent 15 batters to the plate in an inning with seven hits, four errors and a walk.
"We've gotten away with (errors) at times during the year, but we've talked about not being able to do that in a tournament situation," Casey said. "You certainly can't do that against a team having an undefeated season that threw a perfect game against you" earlier in the year.
Englebrecht finally got Granby's first hit in 13 innings against Turners Falls when she singled up the middle in the seventh inning off reliever Haley Ozdarski.
"I wanted to do something," Englebrecht said. "I knew we were down by a lot, but I wanted to stick with it and give it everything I had."
Englebrecht reached base all three times she went to the plate. After the walk, she reached on a bobble by the Turners infield that was ruled an error in the fourth inning before her single in the seventh.
She also impressed the crowd with her glove work in center field, especially on a diving catch in the sixth inning that robbed Ozdarski of a hit.
Englebrecht "came to play today," Casey said.
Noelle Menard, who walked to lead off the seventh, scored on a Taylor Johnson groundout and Englebrecht scored on a Brooke Labrie single to left for Granby's scoring.
Tessa Cote struck out five in the loss, which marked the final game for Johnson, the team's lone senior.
"It's been the same story, losing to Turners every year and it's kind of getting old," Englebrecht said. "Next year, I'm hoping we can knock them down for once."
