Matt Lattanzi, Orioles clinch postseason baseball berth

With a postseason berth on the line, Belchertown baseball senior Matt Lattanzi tossed a one-hitter in a 5-1 victory over South Hadley on the road Friday.

Lattanzi struck out five in the effort, which gave the Orioles (7-13, 5-5 Suburban) a spot in the Western Massachusetts Division 2 Tournament via the 70 percent rule.

"He pitched really well," said Belchertown coach Charles Jasak. "I think he had a lot more in the tank, which is pretty scary."

It was also the Tigers' (4-16, 2-8) first loss of the season to a Division 2 team. South Hadley, the defending WMass D-2 champion, has also clinched a tourney berth via the 70 percent rule.

Eric Adizma and Mike Foley each had an RBI single in the first inning to open the scoring. Matt Anziano hit a sacrafice fly in the third and Cory Menard had an RBI in the fifth for Belchertown.

"We were more focused in this game, everyone was just really focused on their jobs," Jasak said. "It feels great, but I have to admit that we did expect to be here. It was our goal all along to compete for the western Mass. championship."

Eric Pouliot went the distance for the Tigers and Derek Heady doubled in Kyle Callahan to score the only run for the home team.

Northampton 9, Ludlow 1 - The Blue Devils (11-9, 8-2 Suburban) raced out to an early six-run lead and cruised to the home win in their regular-season finale on senior day.

Jake Laga had two hits and two RBIs for Hamp. Nick Behrens (two runs), Enwil Berrios Maldonado, Jack Larson, Tony Fappiano and Jake Griffin all drove in a run apiece.

Gateway Regional 13, Ware 7 - Ray Bressette went 4-for-5 with three RBIs as the Gators (11-9) won on the road.

Jeremy Tanguay was 3-for-4 with a triple and two RBIs and Greg Boylan added two triples and three RBIs.

Gabe Craig was effective in the leadoff spot for the Gators, scoring four runs and knocking in one.

Pathfinder 6, Smith Academy 4 - Nick Fitzgerald pitched four innings and allowed one earned run on seven hits, while striking out six and walking three for the Falcons (10-10).
