Nkamebo, Burnett break Amherst track marks

Amherst Regional track star Tchuijo Nkamebo earned three first-place finishes as the Hurricanes came in second at the western Massachusetts Division 1 championships Saturday in Holyoke.

Nkamebo won the triple jump at 46 feet, 10 inches. That distance established a personal record and a new school mark, previously held by Tommie Lark (46-8.5) in 2007. He then went on to take the 200-meter race in 22.86 seconds.

Amherst's 68 points trailed only the host school, champion Holyoke (71).

The 'Canes 4x100 relay team finished in the top spot at 44.47. Nkamebo was joined by Folajimi Onadipe, Devin Clarke and Ariel Vallellanes.

"I did a pretty good job," Nkamebo said. "Being able to PR and set a school record in the triple was nice. We were pretty excited about winning the relay, because we're all pretty close friends and wanted to have fun and a good meet."

Also for Amherst, Gary Burnett broke his own school record in the 400 hurdles at 59.04, coming in second. John Latour was runner-up in the discus with a throw of 135-3.

"We're always looking for those extra points, and we had a lot of athletes fight hard to get places and little points," said coach Chris Gould. "As long as we go in with a productive week, there a things that are beyond our control at western Mass."

Northampton's Alexander Sullivan took home the title in the mile at 4:28.09 and Ian Lutz was third in 4:32.29, as the Blue Devils came in fifth overall. Tyler Church took third (23.59) in the 200.

Jon Horstman of South Hadley was a double winner in the 400 (51.9) and the 800 (1:56.2) in leading the Tigers to an eighth-place showing. Wes Calhoun was runner-up (21-8) in the long jump.

Belchertown's Jeff Hughes finished third (20-3) in the long jump.

Girls D-1 track

Northampton earned a third-place finish behind five top-three performances. The Blue Devils had 84 points, just behind runner-up Ludlow (87) and champion East Longmeadow (109).

Mia Toffoli won the 400-meter in a time of 57.98 seconds, which is the second-fastest time in school history and the second-best in the state this season. Charlotte Lellman (mile, 5:34.59), Viviane Ford (2-mile, 11:42.33) and Adrienne Pascucci (110 hurdles, 16.37) all came in third place.

Leah Tompkins' high jump of 5-0 was good enough for second place.

Hamp's long-distance relay teams did well, as the 4x400 team of Anna Moore, Pascucci, Khaila Ramirez and Toffoli came in the top spot at 4:06.76, and the 4x800 squad of Ford, Phoebe Hopkins, Lellman and Emma Larson was second at 10:05.36. Hopkins ran the second fastest split time in school history.

Amherst Regional's Josia DeChiara pole-vaulted 8-6 to finish third. The Hurricanes' 4x100 relay squad of was also third at 51.26.

Belchertown's Madison Granger took first in the 800 with a winning time of 2:15.13

For South Hadley, Brianna Tabin finished second in the 200 at 25.21, while Julia LaMontagne came in third in the 400 hurdles at 1:08.91.
