College Roundup: Minutemen lose in finale

Senior Matt Gedman went 3-for-5, but the University of Massachusetts baseball team ended its season with a 10-5 loss to St. Bonaventure on the road Saturday.

Gedman's final hit, a single to right field in the top of the eighth, was his 76th of the season, tying him with Doug Clark (1997) and Ryan Jette (1996) for the program's second most hits in a year.

He also scored two runs.

Nick Sanford was 3-for-3, while Peter Copa and Kyle Multner added two hits, one run and one RBI each in the loss.

Ben Hart allowed seven runs, six earned, on 10 hits and two walks over three innings and was charge with the loss. Dennis Torres went the final five innings, allowing three runs on seven hits and three walks for UMass (17-29-1, 8-15-1 Atlantic 10).

Vanderbilt 9, Georgia 3 - Amherst native Kevin Ziomek tossed three scoreless innings Friday night to earn his first career save. The left-hander allowed one hit and one walk in the effort.

The Commodores finished the regular season in a three-way tie atop the Southeastern Conference, but are the fourth seed in the SEC tourney. They will open the double-elimination event at Regions Park in Hoover, Ala., against the Bulldogs 30 minutes after the end of the prior game, which is set to start at 4:30 p.m. The championship game is set for Sunday, May 29, at 1 p.m.
