Banas tosses fifth career no-hitter for Hopkins Academy
In hindsight it might have been smarter for Pioneer Regional to call the game a rain out and hope it wouldn't face one of the region's best pitchers when the game was rescheduled. Instead, the Panthers were the latest team to be victimized by Garrison Banas' dominant senior season.
In the Hopkins Academy senior left-hander's fifth career no-hitter, six of his teammates never even touched the ball. Banas struck out 17 and got the other four to ground out to him leaving the second baseman, shortstop, third baseman and all three outfielders watching his gem idly in the rain.
"This was one of his most dominant games," said Hopkins coach Pat Lemieux, whose team improved to 12-2 (10-2 Hampshire League). "It was a tough day with all the rain. But it didn't bother him a bit. He did a nice job mixing up his pitches. He really pounded the strike zone."
Only a one-out walk in the third inning separated him from his second career perfect game. He threw 96 pitches. After allowing the walk, he struck out seven straight batters.
Banas threw a perfect game and two mercy-rule shortened five-inning no-hitters last year. He opened this season with a shared no-hitter. He pitched six innings before Aiden Barrett completed that gem.
In 53 innings this season, Banas has allowed 11 hits. He's 9-0 with a save.
Against Pioneer, Barrett led the Hopkins offense with four hits, two RBIs and scored a run. Jamie Garand had two hits, two runs, two walks, a double and an RBI, while eighth grader Evan Delaney had three hits, two runs and an RBI.
Northampton 9, Easthampton 7 (8) - Nick Behrens and Sam Goodwin-Boyd combined to drive in three runs in the top of the eighth inning and the Blue Devils (8-8) held on for the win at Booster Field.
After the Eagles (11-5) tied the game in the bottom of the seventh, Behrens (two hits) gave Northampton the lead back with an RBI single and Goodwin-Boyd (two hits, three RBIs) followed with a two-run double for a 9-6 lead.
Easthampton threatened in the bottom of the frame, scoring once and had runners on second and third with two outs, but Bryan Borges-Vega struck out the final batter to end the game and earn the win.
Jake Laga added two hits and an RBI in the win.
Matt Robinson led the Eagles with three hits and three RBIs, while Chris Starcun contributed three hits and an RBI. Thomas Lucia added two hits and an RBI in the loss.
Frontier Regional 13, Athol 4 - The Red Hawks (9-7, 8-5 Hampshire) broke open the game with seven runs in the fifth inning to earn the win in Athol.
Frontier used five hits, including a two-run double by Ryan Hoar, and four walks in its big frame.
Brad Bean had two hits, including a triple, three walks, three runs scored, one RBI and three stolen bases in the win. Hoar added two hits, two RBIs, two runs scored and two stolen bases.
Rylan Baronas had a two-run single in the fifth.
Dan White went four innings, striking out four and walking three, to earn the win.
Smith Academy 7, Renaissance 4 - David Longstreeth scattered five hits and four walks, and struck out 11 as the Falcons (8-7) won in Springfield.
Mike Molloy, Cameron Woodward (double) and Sam McGrath (two RBIs) each had two hits while Steven Golonka had a hit and two RBIs for Smith Academy, which overcame six errors.
