Smith completes overtime comeback for Minutemen

Kyle Smith capped a remarkable comeback with the game-winning overtime goal as the University of Massachusetts men's lacrosse team defeated Towson 9-8 on the road Saturday.

The Minutemen (7-3, 2-1 CAA) trailed 8-6 with less than three minutes left, but Will Manny cut the deficit to one with 2:40 remaining.

Ryan Hantverk then evened the score with just one second remaining to send the game to overtime.

Smith then won it for UMass, converting his sixth tally of the season with 2:05 left in the extra period.

Manny matched a career-high with four goals. Art Kell (one assist), Greg Rushing and Ryan Hollenbaugh each had a goal, while Anthony Bistardi was credited with two assists.

Tim McCormack made 10 saves in the win.

Amherst 11, Williams 8 - Evan Redwood had three goals and two assists as the Lord Jeffs (9-1, 5-1 NESCAC) defeated their archrivals Saturday in Williamstown.

Devin acton added three goals, while Cole Cherney had two and one assist.

Sam Jakimo made 20 saves in the victory.

Women's lacrosse

UMass 16, St. Bonaventure 10 - Katie Ferris scored five goals, while Dayna Defliese, Jesse O'Donnell and Nina Sarcona added three each as the Minutewomen (11-2, 4-0 A-10) remained undefeated with the win in Alfred, N.Y.

Haley Smith had two goals in the win, while Ali Houlis and Jackie Lyons were credited with two assists each.

Katie Florence made five saves for UMass.

Amherst 9, Williams 4 - Allie Horwitz had four goals as the Lord Jeffs (6-3, 2-3 NESCAC) defeated their archrivals Saturday in Amherst.

Marta Randall added two goals, while MC McClellan had four saves.

Wheaton 22, Mount Holyoke 9 - Hilary Bombard of Northampton had three goals, but the Lyons (4-6, 1-2 NEWMAC) fell at home Saturday.

Babson 17, Smith 2 - Meaghan Fileti scored both goals for the Pioneers (3-8, 0-1 NEWMAC) in the loss Saturday in Babson Park.

Queens 15, AIC 14 - Courtney Szawlowski of Northampton had five goals and an assist as the Yellow Jackets fell in Flushing, N.Y.

Nicole Sawula of Hatfield, a Northampton graduate, made six saves in the loss.
