Tigers Horstman, Tabin fourth at all-state meet

A pair of South Hadley indoor track and field state champions had strong performances but fell just short of the top three at Saturday's all-state championships.

Both Jon Horstman and Brianna Tabin finished fourth in their respective events at the Reggie Lewis Center in Boston.

Horstman completed the boys 600-meter race in 1 minute, 22.81 seconds, which bested his winning times at the western Massachusetts meet and the Division 4 state championships.

"Jon got out to a fabulous start in the fast heat," said South Hadley coach Mike Brouillette. "Last year he came in 15th, so to get fourth along with having a two-second improvement is a true mark of a year of consistent hard work."

Tabin posted her fastest time of the season in the 55 dash. She ran the preliminary race in 7.29 seconds, which put her second.

The senior repeated that time in the finals, but it was only good enough for fourth. The winner, Rebecca Robinson of Arlington, finished in 7.22 seconds.

"Brianna's work on reaction time out of the blocks really began to pay off," Brouillette said. "Hundredths of a second separated the top eight, so she did a great job."

Tabin accounted for all five team points for the Tigers, who came in 34th.

Horstman and Tabin both qualified for the New England championships Friday at the Reggie Lewis Center.

"We've adjusted both their training cycles so they can peak at New Englands, so we expect the best performances to come next weekend," said Brouillette.

Also for South Hadley, Wes Calhoun's long jump of 19-9.75 feet was good enough for 15th place.

Northampton sophomore Mia Toffoli had the best showing of any local athlete, coming in third in the girls 600 at 1:35.94. Phoebe Hopkins (1:38.07) was 13th in the same event. Toffoli's and Hopkins' times were the second- and third-fastest, respectively, in school history.

The Blue Devils girls had a pair of long-distance runners place in the top 14 in the 2-mile. Charlotte Lellman (11:37.39) came in 10th, while Viviane Ford (11:48.33) was 14th overall.

Two of the Blue Devils' relay teams placed, including a fifth-place performance by the 4x400 team of Pascucci, Toffoli, Emma Larson and Hopkins. Their time of 4:02.79 was fourth-fastest in school history.

Northampton and South Hadley were among five teams that finished tied for 34th with five points.

After reaching the semifinals at the all-state wrestling tournament, South Hadley senior Alex Dumais finished sixth overall in the 189-pound weight class.

Dumais lost to East Longmeadow's Kyle Humphries 4-2 in the semifinal match. Once he entered the consolation bracket, he fell to Mike Patterson of Framingham 5-2, then lost the 5th-place match to Brian Harrington of Rockland 4-0.
