NORTHAMPTON - Helen "Nellie" (Farren) Smith, 79, of Bridge Street, died Thursday, Feb. 4, 2011, at Mercy Medical Center in Springfield.

Born July 15, 1931, in Dorchester, she was the daughter of the late James and Mary "Cassie" (Keough) Farren. She graduated from Dorchester High School for Girls.

Helen was a loving mother and homemaker, raising eight children. Her husband, John Francis Smith, predeceased her in 1992.

Helen leaves her sons, John Smith of Northampton, and Michael Smith of Southampton; her daughters, Mary Herlihy and her husband, John, of Naples, Fla., Jeanne MacIsaac of Boston, Anne Smith of Williamsburg, Eileen Mounts and her husband, Chris, of San Diego, Nancy Byerly and her husband, Fritz, of Olympia, Wash., and Patricia MacIsaac-Lindgren and her husband, Mats, of Taby, Sweden.

Helen also leaves her eight grandchildren, Sarah, Lauren and Rachel Smith, Bridgette and Johnnie Byerly, and Michael, Sarah and Ella MacIsaac-Lindgren; along with many cousins and nieces and nephews.

Helen was predeceased by her brothers, James and John Farren, and a sister, Mary Hastie.

The funeral will be Tuesday at 10 a.m. from the Czelusniak Funeral Home of Northampton followed by a Mass at 11 a.m. at the Annunciation Chapel of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Parish, 87 Beacon St., Florence. Calling hours will be today from 4 to 7 p.m. Burial will be at the convenience of the family.
