Milestone for Northampton wrestler: Intrator reaches 100 career wins

Northampton senior wrestler Jake Intrator made personal and program history on Saturday.

Intrator took home his first-ever tournament title and, in the process, became the first Blue Devils wrestler to reach the career 100-win milestone.

The 112-pounder won all three of his matches at the 19th Annual Mount Greylock Tournament in Cheshire, and his 14-2 semifinal victory over Josh Jose of Colonie, N.Y., earned him victory No. 100.

Intrator came back to defeat Jody Fabian of Fair Haven, Vt. 14-3 in the tournament final.

"I would say the 100th is a bigger accomplishment, because it signifies all the hard work I've put in," said Intrator. "That, plus all the help my coaches have given me came together to produce this achievement."

The 100th win may be the bigger accomplishment, but winning the tournament added something special to the day.

"I lost the last final I was in, so I didn't want that to happen again," said Intrator. "I went off and got my head together, listened to some music. Then I went to the mat thinking about winning it. I had a lot of my family there and they were excited."

Sixth-year Northampton coach Brian Bagdon was effusive in praising the four-year wrestler.

"There have been a lot of pretty good wrestlers here, but Jake's the ideal wrestler, and the ideal kid," he said. "He's tough, tactical, smart and a good role model for all the kids around him."

A career 101-36 wrestler, Intrator enters the final two dual meets of the season with a 29-2 mark. He's recorded 18 pins, but as Saturday's results show, he doesn't need to overpower his opponent to win.

"A lot of times I'm not a lot bigger than the other kids, so it's the technical aspects that help me win," he said. "I've done a lot of offseason work that's taken me to the next level. My practice partner, Tim Callahan, has worked me every day, and I owe a lot of my success to him."

After beginning his varsity career with a 11-15 record as a freshman, Intrator went 23-10 as a sophomore and 38-9 last season as a junior, when he came in fifth at the western Massachusetts tournament.

"I think the off-season work put him over the top," Bagdon said. "Coaching can make a guy good, but guys who are great make themselves great. He put in the lifting and the running, and being a two-sport athlete has helped him out tremendously."

Intrator, who played varsity soccer in the fall, agreed with his coach.

"It comes back to the core wrestlers that we have, who push themselves and each other," he said. "The coaches also push us by running clinics. But the work continues on our own, and everyone's devoted and committed."

Bagdon said that when natural talent and hard work combine with a little bit of luck, outstanding achievements are possible.

"At the end of last year, it looked like he would get pretty close," said Bagdon. "Over the four years he hasn't missed a match, no injuries, no sickness. Everything had to come together to make this happen."

The senior would like to wrestle in college, but he'll undoubtedly have options no matter what he pursues. The co-president of the National Honor Society, Intrator has a near-perfect grade point average and earned an SAT score of 2400.

He said being well-rounded in academics and athletics has pushed him to excel in both areas.

"One wouldn't come without the other, because I've learned the value of hard work and what I need to achieve in both fields," said Intrator. "I don't think I'd be as good a student without sports, and I don't think I'd accomplish much in athletics without knowing how to learn."
