Kielb, Konieczny lead Hopkins girls soccer to semifinals
Junior goalkeeper Libby Kielbs terrific second half gave the Hopkins Academy girls soccer team a 1-0 win over Lee in the Western Massachusetts Division 3 Tournament quarterfinals on Sunday.
Kielb made eight of her 11 saves after halftime, keeping Emma Koniecznys first-half tally as the games lone score.
She had four saves where she deflected the shot and then it hit the post, coach Jonathan Sicard said. Without her, who knows what the outcome would have been. Its probably the best game shes played all year.
Konieczny took a pass from Kate Sullivan and buried a shot from 18 yards out in the 26th minute for the game-winner.
The No. 3 Golden Hawks (15-4) will play at No. 2 Granby (16-3) in the quarterfinals on a date to be determined.
Granby 4, Smith Academy 0 The No. 2 Rams (16-3) scored all four goals in the second half to earn the western Mass. Division 3 quarterfinals at home on Sunday.
We started moving the ball better in the offensive third of the field in the second half, coach Nick Boorman said. We passed the ball much better in front of their net.
Kiley Baran, Brooke Labrie and Rachel Mick each had a goal and an assist for the Rams.
Adara Ash also scored a goal.
Baran made one save in the first half, while Abby Hurlburt made zero in the second.
Beth Asher had 11 saves for No. 7 Smith Academy (15-3-1) in the loss.
The Falcons had no seniors on their squad this season.
