UMass field hockey, women's soccer teams win
The University of Massachusetts field hockey team erased an early deficit and earned the athletic department's first victory of the fall by beating Northeastern 2-1, Friday in Boston.
Trailing 1-0, Katie Kelly's second goal of the season 17 minutes and 38 seconds into the game tied the score.
Senior Jaime Bourazeris put UMass ahead 20 minutes into the second half when she converted a penalty corner for her first goal of the season. Nikki Panciocco and Kate Heineman each had an assist on the play.
Alesha Widdall made seven saves for the Minutewomen (1-2), who stay in Boston to face Boston University, Sunday at 1 p.m.
Women's soccer
UMass 4, Vermont 0 - The Minutewomen's win over Vermont at Rudd Field Friday was a double milestone for new coach Ed Matz.
The victory was No. 1 for UMass and No. 100 in his coaching career.
UMass (1-1) scored twice in each half as it controlled the game from the outset.
Meghan Collins put the Minutewomen on the board in the game's 22nd minute and Deanna Colarossi doubled UMass' lead 17 minutes later.
Freshman Kayla Austin scored her first career goal early in the second half and senior Kelsey Anderson closed out the scoring in the 64th minute.
Sophomore Emily Cota made eight saves to earn the shutout.
