Leona Twohig, 94, nurse, beloved mother of 6

Easthampton - Leona G. (Grover) Twohig, 94, of 20 W. Green St., Easthampton, died Friday morning, Aug. 27, 2010, surrounded by loved ones in the leisure of her own home.

Born in Easthampton on Jan. 7, 1916, the daughter of Arthur and Julia (LeVitre) Grover, she attended local schools, graduating in the early 1920s from the Cooley Dickinson School of Nursing in Northampton. She affiliated first in Fitchburg, and then in Boston at the former Women and Children's Hospital. She finally took a position at Cooley Dickinson Hospital, where she worked for almost 20 years, taking particular pride as head nurse and supervisor of the Men's Ward. She retired from nursing after her marriage to Edward G. Twohig Sr., former golf professional at the Amherst Golf Course, to whom she was married for 54 years. She was pleased to become a homemaker, raise a family of six boys, and have a home of her own.

A lifelong communicant of the former Immaculate Conception Parish, Easthampton, she loved her parish and took great solace from her faith. She will always be remembered for her sense of humor, her appreciation of Irish music, her care for others, her devotion to the rosary, and her deep love and concern for her family.

She is survived by six sons: Edward G. Jr., PGA golf professional, and his wife, Ann (Vincent) of Florence; Stephen F., executive vice president - chief operating officer of the Washington based Donahue Co, and his wife, Bobbie (Coogan) of Great Falls, Va.; retired Army Col. John J., and his wife, Deborah (Davis) of Fort Leavenworth, Kan.; David P., PGA golf professional, Amherst Golf Course, and his wife, Sandra (Marchant-Heide) of North Amherst; retired Air Force Col. Thomas F., of Sumter, S.C.; and Rev. Michael J., of the Diocese of Springfield; a sister, Helen Wollschlager of Meriden, Conn.; 11 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren, with another on the way; and many nieces and nephews.

The family extends its deepest appreciation for the care provided for her by so many: the VNA and Hospice of the Pioneer Valley, Highland Valley Eldercare, Western Mass Eldercare of Holyoke, the Social Club and its Care Ministry from Our Lady's Parish, her former pastor and faithful visitor Fr. Eugene D. Honan, her doctors Diane DeBenedetto and Shawki Kanasi, and especially her caregiver Joanne Foley of Westfield.

The funeral will be held at Our Lady of the Valley Roman Catholic Parish (Immaculate Conception Church), 33 Adams St., Easthampton, Saturday, Sept. 11, at 11 a.m., followed by burial in St. Brigid Cemetery, Easthampton. A visiting hour will be held at 10 a.m. in the church prior to the funeral liturgy. The family requests in lieu of flowers, donations in Leona's name be made to the Chalice of Salvation, the Our Lady of the Valley Memorial Fund, VNA and Hospice of the Pioneer Valley, or any charity of one's choice.
