Minutewomen defeated at home
The University of Massachusetts field hockey team scored its first goal of the season, but its first win remained elusive as the Minutewomen fell to No. 17 Indiana, 2-1, Sunday at the UMass Invitational at Garber Field.
After a scoreless first half, the Hoosiers scored almost immediately when Brooke Borneman knocked home a rebound past Minutewoman goalie Alesha Widdall (six saves) less than two minutes into the second.
Just over five minutes later, Indiana (1-1) doubled its edge when Brenna Moeljadi converted a penalty corner to put the visitors up 2-0.
UMass cut its deficit to 2-1 with 12 minutes and 50 seconds left when Katie Kelly converted a Jaime Bourazeris pass on a penalty corner but the Minutewomen couldn't produce an equalizer and fell to 0-2.
UMass is on the road for its next two, both in Boston. It is at Northeastern, Friday at 2 p.m. and Boston University, Sunday at 1 p.m.
