Haiti hoop star Lalanne reportedly headed to UMass

AMHERST - Cady Lalanne appears to be headed to the University of Massachusetts after all.

Scouthoops.com and the Atlanta Journal Constitution both reported Monday that Lalanne, a 6-foot-8, 215-pound big man from Haiti, who went to high school in Orlando, planned on enrolling at UMass this fall.

Lalanne, who was a top recruiting target for UMass last fall, committed to Georgia but did not reach the NCAA's minimum academic eligibility standards. The Southeastern Conference doesn't allow its members to accept nonqualifiers.

Lalanne, who still needs to be accepted by the UMass admissions department, would not be allowed to accept a scholarship or participate in games or practices as a freshman. He'd be eligible to play in the 2011-12 season and could regain his lost year of eligibility if he attains a minimum number of credits at the end of his fourth year in college.

Lalanne would help UMass replace senior big man Hashim "Big City" Bailey, who'll graduate after this season.

ESPN's recruiting site ranked him in its top 150 players in the class of 2010 and included the following evaluation:

"Lalanne is a long athletic forward who has a tremendous amount of potential. He is a solid mid-range jump shooter with the ability to stretch the defense with extended range. He possesses a very soft touch for a big guy. Cady has very good ball skills, and sees the floor well. He is an adept passer off the dribble as well as from the post. He is very patient in the post with his back to the basket finding the open man while not forcing shots. His length allows him to block and alter shots around the rim, while making it tough to shoot over from the perimeter. He has good feet which allow him to guard on the perimeter. Cady needs to improve his tenacity for rebounding the ball. He sometimes floats on the floor which keeps him from getting to balls he should be able to get. He is up and down at times, but there is no doubt the talent is there he just has to put it all together all the time."

HARRIS TO LITHUANIA - Former Minuteman Ricky Harris will begin his professional career in Europe as he'll join Siauliai in Lithuania.

Harris left UMass at No. 3 on the school's career scoring list with 1,960 career points.
