Tiger boys get top lacrosse seed
Having the top western Massachuesetts goaltender in Sean Mackey helped the South Hadley boys lacrosse team go 18-1 in the regular season.
The defending Western Massachusetts Division 2 champion, which also has one of the area's leading scorers in Chris Menard, received the No. 1 seed in this year's tournament.
Mackey's 221 saves is tops in the region, and Menard has the most points in western Massachusetts with 121 (69 goals, 52 assists).
After losing their only game of the season 10-7 to Westfield, the Tigers have won 10 straight heading into the tournament.
South Hadley received a bye in the first round and will host a semifinal game on a date to be determined.
Northampton (14-6) is the No. 4 seed and will host No. 5 Minnechaug (9-9) at 4:30 p.m. Thursday. The Blue Devils defeated the Falcons 11-6 during the regular season.
If Northampton beats Minnechaug again, the Blue Devils would meet the Tigers in the semifinals.
South Hadley defeated Northampton 6-2 in last year's quarterfinals. The Tigers swept this year's regular-season series.
Charlie Cronin leads Northampton in scoring, with a western Massachusetts-high 80 goals.
In the girls Division 1 tournament, South Hadley (11-7) is the fifth seed and will play at No. 4 East Longmeadow (10-6) at 6 p.m. Tuesday.
