Gators score key comeback victory
Needing two wins in four games this week to qualify for the postseason, the Gateway Regional baseball team enjoyed a huge 7-6 comeback victory over Monson in eight innings Tuesday in Huntington.
Gateway (8-6, 8-5 Bi-County) scored three times in the seventh to force extra innings and then added one in the eighth to walk off with a win.
"We've been talking as a team about the importance of taking one at-bat at a time," coach Gary St. Peter said. "We don't want to give away any outs. It kind of clicked today. We needed to fight."
The Gators scored all three runs in the seventh before they recorded an out. Korey Whitaker (2-for-3, triple, two runs scored) was hit by a pitch to start the rally. Joe Simonowicz (3-for-3, one walk, one hit by pitch, two RBIs) singled and Ray Bressette (2-for-4) followed with a two-run triple to cut the deficit to 6-5.
Trevor Hamel followed with a single that scored Bressette to tie the game.
Gateway got the game-winner in the eighth when Tyler Pease singled with one out and was replaced at first by Greg Boylan. After a second out, Whitaker singled and Simonowicz followed with a single to left-center that scored Boylan.
"It didn't look good going into the last inning, but the senior leaders kept it together," St. Peter said. "It was a big step for us to hopefully put us on the right path toward tournament. It's the perfect time to have everyone clicking at the same time."
Senior ace Mike Miller was tremendous for the Gators, keeping them in the game despite falling behind the Mustangs (11-8, 8-7) in the fourth inning.
He needed just 93 pitches to get through all eight innings, allowing two earned runs on 10 hits and no walks while striking out six.
Gateway needs one more win to clinch a playoff berth. It hosts Pioneer Christian at 4:30 today, then has road games at Granby (Thursday) and Southwick (Friday) to end the regular season.

Granby 9, Franklin Tech 8 - When the Rams scored in the bottom of the sixth, it seemed like an insurance run.

Sean Sheridan had four hits, drove in three runs and scored the Granby run in the sixth on an RBI single by Andy Gifford.
The Rams survived some shaky defense with five errors. None of the five runs that starter Zak Cloutier gave up were earned. He allowed three hits and five walks while striking out five in six innings.

Dillon O'Connor (two RBIs), John Hodgen (two hits, RBI), Bill Courtney (two hits, RBI) and Matt Anziano played well for the Orioles.
Andrew Sadowski, Sam Kerstetter and Matty Bak singled for the Blue Devils (10-9, 6-3), and Dylan Kaufman walked with the bases loaded.
South Hadley 8, Chicopee Comp 3 - Ryan Horstman struck out nine over four no-hit innings and left after the Tigers (10-8, 7-2 Suburban) took a 5-0 lead in the top of the fifth.

Sabis 2, Smith Vocational 0 - Two unearned runs clinched the Tri-County South title for the Bulldogs.
The Vikings (12-6, 9-2) needed a win Tuesday and another in their final game to earn a tie for the crown.
Andy Blair took the loss for Smith despite allowing just three hits and a walk while striking out nine.
Blair and Scott Matusiewicz had the Vikings' only hits.
Frontier 9, Easthampton 5 - Kirk Gross (2-for-4) had a two-run homer to highlight an eight-run fourth inning as the Red Hawks (6-12, 6-8 Hampshire) won at Booster Field in Easthampton.

McCann 7, Smith Academy 6 - With two games to go, the Falcons (9-9, 4-7 Tri-County North) still need one more win to clinch a spot in the Western Massachusetts Division 3 Tournament.

The Hornets scored in the bottom of the sixth to break a 6-6 tie.
Mike Malloy had two hits and scored twice for Smith, and Chris Sulda added two hits and an RBI.
