Belchertown girls get first win

Half an hour after the game ended, the Belchertown girls lacrosse team was still screaming in delight.

The Orioles, who are in their first season as a varsity program, earned their first-ever win 13-10 over Cathedral in Springfield on Thursday.

"It's been building toward this," Belchertown coach Josh Wallace said. "The past couple of games, I thought we could have won. It just wasn't quite there. The girls needed the confidence to finish a game and they had it" Thursday.

Wallace pointed to the team's last game, a 10-6 loss to West Springfield on Tuesday as an example.

"We were ahead 4-3 at halftime in that game, but we didn't come out ready to finish them off in the second half," he said. On Thursday, "we did."

Stefanie Dufresne posted her second straight hat trick to go with two assists for the Orioles, while Brianna Del Valle added a career-high three goals.

Emma Norden scored twice for Belchertown, and Sarah Berthier, Kaitlin Swift (one assist), Kayla Panek (one assist), Amy Rumanowski and Courtney Cassidy each had one goal.

Julia Beach had an assist for the Orioles.

Samantha Teehan made 12 saves in goal for Belchertown (1-8, 1-2 Valley League). The Panthers fell to 0-9, 0-6 with the loss.

Westfield 14, South Hadley 9 - Katie Cavanaugh scored three goals while Lauren Barthelette and Katie Tierney (assist) each tallied two but the Tigers (5-7, 3-1 Valley League) lost on the road.

Martha Hamlin and Nora McDonough (assist) each had one goal for South Hadley, while Maddie Dowd had one assist.
